On 9 Feb, Meteosat-9 marked 20 years in orbit! 🛰️

Since 2005, it has delivered vital weather & climate data - from full-disc imagery over Europe & Africa to rapid 5-min severe weather scans, & now coverage over the Indian Ocean.

A true longevity champion.

People have been asking me for a print of my multi-spectral Jupiter FOR YEARS. Unfortunately, I could not transport the giant painting at the time & am emotionally attached to it remaining in my sight.

BUT THEN I painted a little version. It’s even better! Spectrum of Storms coming in 2 weeks ☁️

SpaceX to focus on Moon settlements instead of Mars?!? Wow, it is hard to overstate what a change -- what a climb-down -- this is for Musk. It has always been Mars for him. Full stop. Supposedly the goal behind *everything* he does.

SHE’S FINISHED! My 5-foot-long Enterprise D oil painting is complete after nearly 100 hours of work!

I remember being 13 years old or so and trying to draw her and it was so hard, and all I wanted was to be able to do something like this. Truly a dream come true. 🥰🖖

From NASA

Deimos is the smaller of Mars' two moons at about 9 miles (about 15 kilometers) wide. The bright "star" in this view from the Perseverance rover is Deimos moving through the pre-dawn sky.

Just rewatched Serenity for the first time in at least a decade. It’s my last favourite Firefly story (though I still love it!), but I realised I chose it as I couldn’t choose just one episode of the series to watch.
Damn, I miss those characters!

Androzani, obvs.
Black Orchid, just for the hilarity of watching the cast pretend not to be freezing their arses off.
The Visitation, for the wonderful highwayman/actor character.
Snakedance.
Not sure for the last one.

MKBS, a proposed Soviet space station cancelled in 1974. This was to be the centerpiece of a broader initiative called MOK, which envisioned a whole system of orbital complexes with the MKBS acting as the central hub for crew transfers and control.

I'm always surprised when anyone asks me for advice on making cel shaded renders as I'm very much still learning #Blender3D myself and scraping by on tutorials. 😅

But of course, everyone needs to start somewhere, so here's a thread with what I've learned so far and some good tutorials I've used! 🧵

I don’t need to start knitting the season 16/17 Hero + Stunt scarf.

I don’t NEED to….

This scarf is simply the last remnant of the original scarf attached to the stunt duplicate. The two scarves are not the same width (66 and 60 stitches) but are joined nonetheless. There is some bleaching or fading that occurred on the second purple stripe of the stunt duplicate side.

I love the film 2010, but this aspect really annoyed me. We literally saw Floyd tell Bowman that HAL knew about the monolith in a recorded message in 2001.
“I didn’t know” my arse!
Jan 30th 2001 - HAL 9000 received a top secret directive to be kept secret from even the crew of Discover One. The directive informed the artificial intelligence computer that the actual mission was to investigate a monolith.

something worth remembering: graduates already pay a tax on the benefits of going to university. it's called "income tax". the government takes 20-45% of the increased earnings resulting from your university education.
Pulling together thoughts on the Plan B student loans, the way the system is set up means there will be a 40-50% chunk of people who for some of the most expensive years of their careers will pay a 9% higher tax rate than the other 50-60% and this does basically make it impossible to do tax policy.
