China oil consumption for road transport down 9% this year.
Denmark oil consumption down 11% in 2024.
Not many similarities between the two countries but good to see the shared path before us.
A reminder that the EU spends 120bn euro per year on oil for road transport.
"Far from a peak, China's gasoline demand is estimated to have fallen 9% in October on the year to 12.5 million tons, with average daily use roughly flat with September..."

China's oil demand is entering structural decline.
EVs put an end to China's usual holiday surge in gasoline use
Tianyu Jiang took a 2,000-km (1,200-mile) road trip this month during China's national holiday week, driving in his electric vehicle from the southwestern Sichuan basin to Beijing for the first time.

A fun day. The first time I've seen the Electrification Alliance up close working together to deliver the policy suggestions we need to accelerate electrification. Heat pumps, Wind, Solar, Flex, EVs, E-Mobility, Utilities, Electricians - all speaking with one voice. Pretty damn cool. Great people.

Who of my followers knows about Linky smart meter data and what they send to Enedis?
Odd electricity question

In Ravières we're suffering from short power outages, each lasting 10-30 seconds. Neighbours are suffering the same. It's been going on for months - one a week or so

Is a Linky smart meter going to provide Enedis data on this? en.selectra.info/energy-franc...

The central global political divide is not ideological; it is about fossil fuels vs renewable, and ultimately post-scarcity, energy supply. Fossil fuels and petrostates are not going to go quietly, but China is rendering them obsolete with a speed and decisiveness that have few historical parallels.

Late night reading:
Denmark's car fleet is currently 12% EV.
Those EVs reduced oil imports by 11%
That saved about 225m euro.
From here: ember-energy.org/latest-insig...

There was another time that Denmark's oil consumption went down by 11%...

Electrification, using homegrown clean power, is the main tool to reduce the EU’s exceptionally high and risky dependence on imported fossil fuels.

@solarpowereu.bsky.social had me on their podcast to talk about the EUs upcoming Electrification Action Plan.

I mostly talked about implementing existing legislation, maintaining the 2035 car standards. Plus my favourite idea: a Rural Homes Electrification Mission.

Germany prepares draft law to enable local utilities to phase out gas grids where demand declines permanently

Amendment would allow utilities to disconnect users from the gas grid if they do not see future for infrastructure

Good question:

"If anything, the EU could fairly ask why one of its wealthiest members, and one of its biggest per-capita polluters, should be granted exceptions, when poorer countries are making greater efforts to cut emissions?"

Like a minor league 'Come from away.'

Curious if we will spend the night at a hotel or get out of here early enough to take a train back to BXL.

Three BXL Airlines A319 or similar planes here as far as I can see.

How far fetched is it to wonder if an EU attaché or MEP had a child in a US university, or family working in the US on visas, if the US would single out those representatives for particular pressure on a key issue?

Do we have the ability to react appropriately to such pressure?

"Make electricity cheaper" helps solve pretty much all of Europe's main challenges. The cheaper it gets, the faster we go.

Read this (and the other two papers) from @regassistproj.bsky.social who are knocking it out of the park.
The future energy bill is an electricity bill.

This is why we must 'Make Electricity Cheaper' for households, businesses and industry.

In our 3rd paper at RAP on this topic, Tom Butler & I look at reducing tax & levies added to electricity prices for industry.
