Colombia is pushing for a binding global minerals treaty to tackle mining harms through supply-chain traceability.

But resistance at UNEA-7 watered the proposal down to a nonbinding resolution — leaving traceability out as NGOs and some states vow to keep fighting for stronger rules.
What’s happening with the global treaty to trace critical minerals?
The negotiations were intense, says Julia Peña Niño, the Colombia country manager at the Natural Resource Governance Institute. At the seventh U.N. Environment Assembly (UNEA-7) in Nairobi last…

To understand what's going down at WaPo, this information is essential. The tech bros brought Trump to power, and the are exploiting their hold on the administration to accumulate wealth in an obscene fashion. The last thing they want is a newspaper running exposés that mess things up.

Petulant little orange man learning he will never outshine a PhD drops more bogus threats….
Trump one week ago: "It's a good thing for him [Carney] to sign a trade deal. If he can get a deal with China, he should do that."

Trump today: "If Canada makes a deal with China, it will immediately be hit with a 100% Tariff against all Canadian goods and products coming into the U.S.A."

Is this the most dangerous, and unhinged, international speech by a US president ever? Demands Greenland (and Iceland). Threatens Canada. Trashes NATO. Makes fun of leaders. Disparages Europe's environmental goals.

Carney was right to call our current moment a "rupture"
Trump on Canada: They should be grateful also, but they’re not. I watched your prime minister yesterday. He wasn’t so grateful. But they should be grateful to us. Canada lives because of the U.S. Remember that, Mark, the next time you make your statements.

In a speech to the World Economic Forum, Mark Carney says middle powers such as Canada must accept that the rules-based international order is effectively dead, and great power rivalry with is here to stay. Key excerpt:

bloody hell day:

Carney on the USEFUL FICTION of the US rules-based order, where trade rules were enforced asymmetrically, where laws applied to the weakest and where the strongest would exempt themselves when convenient.
Carney: "American hegemony in particular helped provide public goods, a stable financial system... this bargain no longer works. Let me be direct. We are in the midst of a rupture, not a transition... recently, great powers have begun using economic integration as a weapon. Tariffs as leverage ... "

Canada needs to get in on this in a robust way, and show support for Greenland, Denmark, and other northern European allies, for two important reasons: 1) It's the right thing to do. 2) We could very well be next.

“We will not let ourselves be blackmailed… Sweden is now having intensive discussions with other EU countries, Norway, and the United Kingdom for a coordinated response.”

New from me: Trump's invasion of Venezuela and threats against Greenland are forcing a reckoning for the international community. For Canada, it forces us to ask the question: Are Mark Carney's "Canada Strong" policies actually up to the task of protecting Canadian independence?
Canada’s economic Maginot Line
The US invasion of Venezuela and threats against Greenland are forcing world leaders to get real about the US threat to the international order. Here in Canada, it's highlighting how Mark Carney's Canada Strong policies aren't up to the task of protecting Canadian sovereignty.
