The true metric by which you can judge English social class is "some of that nice ham".
If you go to make lunch and someone says, "ooh, there's some of that nice ham in the fridge", you're middle-class.

When I was art college they had so little faith in us that, during our business studies module, the only thing they made sure to hammer home was how to dissolve our inevitably failed business and re-open it as an identical, differently named business, assigning the debt to the old one.

Back in the late-90s I answered the door to an elderly woman who wanted me to sign her petition against the internet. She said “I’ve not really used it to be honest but I know it’s not a good thing,” and by god, she was right.
