MAGA and California NIMBYs agree: if you can't afford to live here, that's your problem, and you should live in another state. The better solution: build more homes in California, including the bay area, and welcome our new neighbors.
Bessent: "You know the best way to bring your inflation rate down? Move from a blue state to a red state. Blue state inflation is half a percent higher."

Happy Middle Housing Day in Berkeley. As of today, multifamily housing up to 3 stories at 70 units per acre is byright and ministerial on all Berkeley lots in the flatlands and foothills for the first time in history, stretching from Kensington to Oakland.

There's no evidence that the MacArthur BART TOD project drove out low income or minority groups. The median household income at MacArthur station is lower than all the neighborhoods around it that gentrified with little or no development.

Translation of this MAGA talking point: "To keep people of color from moving into the suburbs, enact restrictive zoning that bans construction of apartments or even duplexes."
Ciattarelli: "We've got a severe overdevelopment crisis in our suburban communities because of the Democrats' idea of social engineering."

What can mid-rise housing look like on side streets where lots are redeveloped one at a time? This example is a good one.
- All homes have windows in at least two directions.
- Elevator building.
- Entry door from a balcony for fresh air.
50x122 is a common lot size in much of western North America.
The New Vancouver Special - 50' lot edition.

Accessible single stair flats on a 50x122 lot.
12 family size homes (or) 24 small units.

Proudly voted for #SB79 to build dense, transit oriented housing. If not here, where else?

I’ve lived near transit all my life. But too much of it is stuck as suburbs. Cities are evolving, living things. They are not mausoleums to the past

Why is the rent so damn high in LA? Simple economics: the demand for housing is extremely high and our housing supply is extremely low.

Big thanks to Oakland Mayor Barbara Lee for endorsing SB 79. Mayors grapple with the economic & human fallout of our housing shortage. Let’s make housing more abundant & strengthen our transit systems.

The vast majority of zoning codes, each in their own right a radical experiment that would on to completely remake the cities they regulated, were adopted without virtually any public involvement.
A city will move with surprising alacrity when it wants to destroy its capacity to build. Contrary to the decades-long community input quests that we undertake before considering an increase in zoning, the 1979 Berkeley city council down-zoned the entire city in just 7 meetings. R-5 to R-2 here:
