Exactly this, there's a reason they keep *threatening* to do it. It's "I'm going to count to three" when you know there's zero plan for what happens at "three". You wind up with increasingly desperate "two and a half... two and three quarters..."
The threat of invoking the Insurrection Act is way more powerful than actually doing it, and anyone who thinks doing it is a good idea has a terminal case of Twelve Year Old Brain where the victory is that the Army does what I want I win forever because they’re the tough guys from the Army.
Curious if anyone has a plausible theory of victory for the administration if it were to invoke the Insurrection Act.

How does the administration "win" in such a scenario?

Best I can tell, it is magical thinking by a certain somebody at the White House, but maybe I'm missing something.

The cracks in their own party are already emerging! The Chair of the House Homeland Security Committee just sent a letter calling for an oversight hearing and the letter fired a shot across the bow of (paraphrasing) "and we also asked for a hearing on the 15th which you ignored".
it really is government by a bunch of bull connors. basically walking into traps set for them by their opposition. connor also did not understand that beating the hell out of demonstrators was *what they wanted*

Freeze-frame adjudication is when you dare use actual evidence like recordings from the scene to contradict the narrative I invented to justify shooting innocent people in the street.
BOVINO: He was in the scene actively impeding and assaulting law enforceme--

BASH: But he wasn't impeding. He was filming, which is a legal thing to do in the United States

BOVINO: Dana, let's not free frame adjudicate this now

lmao Trump just got absolutely humiliated on a global stage over the Greenland shit and is immediately turning around and going back to "make Canada the 51st state" because why not.
Trump desperate to control Canada.

How fucking depressing do you think it has to be for some Danish NCO to get told sorry we need you to go sit around in a hotel in Nuuk for a couple of weeks.
Footage shows Danish troops arriving in Greenland as part of a new military deployment. Among the personnel who landed on the island is Major General Peter H. Boysen, Chief of the Danish Army Command. #Greenland

On the one hand I hate the e-bike law but on the other hand, the types of people that regularly use the word “incurious” hate it so now I’m conflicted perhaps even verging toward liking it.

The shocking part isn't what's in the letter; Trump's been saying this kind of shit for a long time now. It's the realization that there is just zero daylight between the way he talks on his stupid fake Twitter and the way he wants things like international diplomacy to be conducted.
(NYT) - President Trump is now claiming that one reason he is pushing to acquire Greenland is that he didn’t win the Nobel Peace Prize, according to a message he sent to Norway’s prime minister over the weekend.

On the one hand: as far as I’m concerned we won our super bowl last week and anything else is gravy especially because Seattle will absolutely carve up our defense.

On the other hand 🐻⬇️!!!

Just logging in, putting on a monocle and checking if anything interesting involving NJ Transit is occurring in the near future while picking up my teacup and taking a big sip from it.

you can't actually suppress away a wave of discontent. (relatedly, i think a lot of you have no idea how large this country is and how small its various military and security forces are relative to its population)

As one of a couple of people at my job who's been told to find applications for this stuff, let me tell you it's been a VERY short list of incredibly simple stuff. Entirely tasks that could be done by a person in a few minutes.

The ceiling on these LLM's is "mildly useful productivity tool."
Every example of ai being useful begins with "okay imagine you're in a situation, and you are very dumb"

Better late than never I guess?

I dunno what else to say about it. I just really think it should’ve been pretty obvious idk last year that the guys shouting from the rooftops “we’re fascists! No, really, just, we’re literally fascists!” are fascists
“.. Are we really gonna be the Gestapo, 'Where's your papers?' Is that what we've come to?"

Link's Awakening (and the Switch remake) would like a word.
Despite being tiny and now 30 years old, the atmosphere and design of the Lost Woods in Link to the Past is the ultimate forest zone and has not been surpassed in any subsequent Zelda game or maybe any 3D game ever.

spoiler alert: apparently miracles are real and we saw one last night.
I don't know if even Chicago Pope, the Pope from Chicago, can save the Bears this game.

The really striking thing is just how much these ICE/CBP agents just have no idea at all what they are doing and are just resorting to randomly firing stuff at people.

I mean fuck, there’s multiple instances just in this video of these guys nearly slipping and falling on ice.
Video might be worse. bsky.app/profile/chri...

The past few days - yesterday in particular - have really crystallized for me just how much Trump 2 is motivated by spite and seething rage that suburban white America largely turned on Trump in 2020 and in particular the George Floyd protests.
You never see these freaks happy. There is a sort of libidinal joy they perform, mostly for each other, but it comes only from of the immiseration of their enemies. No victory brings relief, just a temporary reprieve of grievance. I do not believe the machinery which drives us and them are the same.

I just have always imagined this bit from Silmarillion being Celegorm inserting profanity between every other word.

“You want a fucking Silmaril? Well I want to use your fucking chest to sheathe my sword and I might even fucking do it.”

This was too much for Pippin. His thoughts went back to the Field of Cormallen, and here was a squint-eyed rascal calling the ring-bearer ‘little cock-a-whoop’.
The Lord of The Rings movies were rated PG-13. By current rules that means that each film could contain one use of the word "Fuck". Which line are you altering to insert the most useful swear word?

"I can't carry it for you, but I can Fucking carry you"

Oh no who could have possibly seen this obviously airtight business plan not getting any attention.

If Ameristar was smart, they'd have talked to Andy Byford, he seems to be willing to buy just about any crap that weirdos throw in at Amtrak.
