In narcissistic relationships, the trauma bond is a deep and distracting sense of love or connection that blocks you from seeing the toxic cycles of the relationship clearly.[8] Nobody stays in a narcissistic relationship because it is abusive and uncomfortable, and describing survivors of adult narcissistic relationships as “masochists” or “gluttons for punishment” is an inaccurate and unfair characterization. The good moments are what draw you in and what you want to sustain; the bad moments are confusing and unsettling. The narcissistic person controls the “emotional thermostat” for the relationship, so if they are having a good run or trying to win you over, you may have weeks or even months of good days, and then when they don’t feel validated or safe, the relationship falls into an abyss of invalidation, anger, manipulation, and gaslighting. Over time, the bad days become a signal that perhaps the good day is coming, and so even the bad days get paired with a sense of anticipation, keeping you even more stuck and less likely to see the bad days more clearly as alarm bells.

For me it is all about consent. Can a culture without that level of tech or space travel (or even knowledge of other sentient species) consent to contact like that without a terrible power imbalance?

Now, how some writers use it in the shows....

Ultimately, I see it as a critique of colonialism.
