I’m desperately sad to hear that Tony Harrison has died. He was one of the first poets I ever saw read – in Leeds in the 1980s. But also, his was such a unique and powerful voice, and his blend of classicism and class consciousness remains potent - although he was much more than that as a poet.

Tony Harrison’s 1977 The Mysteries was a massive @nationaltheatre.org.uk hit that I missed. But I loved his adaptation of Victor Hugo’s Le Roi s’amuse, better known as Verdi’s Rigoletto. It was a flop but I’ve never forgotten it, esp. Richard Eyre’s staging and Bob Crowley’s set.
Tony Harrison RIP.
