A few #lichens from my area. Physcia cf. aipolia (accompanied by Xanthoria parietina and others). Hypogymnia tubulosa, and Pseudevernia furfuracea (with Parmelia sulcata).

Our conifers are often completely covered in that species (regardless of nearby Xanthoria)

also! next you see a xanthoria, look to the nearest tree. You'll probably catch a plastimatia glauca!

Xanthoria and Xanthoparmelia are really common in Nitrogen heavy areas; is this area near a street or perhaps a farm?

In the Americas we've started to lump Rusavskia with Xanthoria, and I do think you've a Xanthoria, but I'm not sure about elegans--elegans typically doesn't have a lumping growth. But I also can't find any others it would be, so! :)

@spribille.bsky.social is this Xanthoria parietina? Or possibly X. aureola? This is in eastern Newfoundland, on seaside cliffs. I know X. aureola is a European species(and X. parietina is common in NL), but the narrowish lobes had me wondering if it might be X. aureola.

My guess for the "Xanthoria" is Polycauliona polycarpa.

Lichens on a stick. The white/grey lichen is a Hypogymnia and the yellow lichen is, I think, a Xanthoria (sunburst) lichen.

Some nice close-ups of that beautiful green Xanthoria parietina. On a wet and shady stile in Dorset. #lichen

Xanthoria parietina, usually bright yellow, appears green in shady conditions because it reduces production of its yellow UV-protective pigment (parietin), allowing its green algal partner (Trebouxia) to show through. On a wet stile in Dorset. #lichen

After heavy rain this morning the sun has come out so this gorgeous Common Sunburst Lichen seems perfect for #FungiFriday. 🍄 I love the orange cup-shaped apothecia.

Yes, I’ve read that too. This lichen is, I think, a Stereocaulon sp. a rock foam, and likes to live in barren areas and on nutrient poor substrates - I think it looks like sea spray. Not sure if chemically it handles the salt in the same way as Xanthoria parietina but it seems to be doing well here.
January 12, 2026 at 11:31 AM
I've read that some lichens like Xanthoria parietina like the seawater's alkalinity and don't mind the salt.

Busy start to the New Year so was delighted to finally able to get out on a 10 mile walk through the snow yesterday. Spotted one huddled ladybird on the gate post plus a single fungi and Yellow scales (Xanthoria parietina) lichen on a fallen tree I was negotiating climbing over #WildWebsWednesday

Well, I got into the hobby by using one of those species ID apps so usually I just let the phone tell me since I'm not really an expert. Apparently it's yellow wall lichen (Xanthoria parietina).
