Macron: “We’ve just witnessed Russia launch an ultra-long-range missile for the second time. This is a clear signal from a state arming itself with game-changing capabilities. We are within range. To remain secure, Europe, especially France, must acquire such new class of weapon.”

More realistically tho there is cost to launching an act of aggression against Greenland, that cost gets higher if Danish soldiers die in the assault and is even higher if British, German, French etc. troops die as well.

It is if the implication is that killing that one officer might put you on an escalation ladder that might potentially end in thermonuclear apocalypse.

I know. I guess the regime got away with it for now.
It's kinda crazy how all the autocrats there closed ranks around Iran.

Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan says Ankara opposes military action against Iran, insisting the country’s internal problems should be solved by Iranians themselves. He downplayed unrest as economic discontent misread as an uprising and urged dialogue between the US and Iran.

I just love the implication that the provinces would be admitted as separate states because, while it makes a lot of sense, it also means the republicans would gain at most 3-5 new US senators, the dems would gain like 15-20.

That's fair. And people have the right to be emotional about these things.
I just think that when it comes to national security, you want your PLAN A to succeed. So many people jumping straight to debating what to do after it fails makes me uneasy.
January 15, 2026 at 11:52 AM
I get it, it's a credibility thing.
Yet it's kinda surreal to see a debate, where the Yanks keep telling Europeans "Your deterrence will fail!" and then the Euros respond with "Yeah! But when it fails, It'll fail CATASTROPHICALLY! FOR BOTH OF US!!!🖕"
January 15, 2026 at 11:36 AM
Look. I woke up late today. I check bsky and see people debating what happens when Trump stomps on our tripwire? One group says Europe wouldn't fight, the other that we would. And I'm like "Jesus Christ people what's wrong with y'all?"
January 15, 2026 at 11:36 AM
Kinda? Not really. Backing down, objectively speaking, would be an option for our governments. But that's not the point here.
The point of a tripwire is to make any potential use of force more risky and thus more costly to the Americans and hope it dissuades them from using force in the first place.
January 15, 2026 at 11:36 AM
I'm not disagreeing with either of you, but it's worth reminding ourselves that the point of a tripwire force is to avoid a fight. Gaming out what would happen if it was tripped presupposes it'll fail. I don't think it will fail tho.
January 15, 2026 at 10:30 AM
Asking yourself "What would we do if the US actually were to bomb our troops?" Is missing the point of a tripwire force.
If the Americans actually bomb Greenland, then the tripwire already failed.
When Al-Qaida bombed trains in Madrid and killed 193 people on 11.3.2004, Spain's reaction was to withdraw from Iraq and elect a pacific center-left government.

A tripwire force is only as good as the national resolve to go to war if the wire is actually tripped.
January 15, 2026 at 10:15 AM
It's about signalling. The costlier the signal, the more likely it is to work.
Posturing like you're ready to fight decreases the odds you'll have to.
