I find lichen beautiful.
Important you know that I am trying to learn by walking a very long road - happy to be educated and/or corrected
Current focus is lichen that I find around me without looking too hard. My everyday lichen
More of this #lichen behind the tennis courts. I have started to see this type (Ramalina sp.) hanging out a lot with what I think is a teloschites sp. and i got the fanciful idea that there might be some sort of cross over. I’ll see if I can find a pic and post next to illustrate #FungiFriends

This #lichen on a native tree not certain which as didn’t photograph the leaves (foolish 😅) I’ve circled the tennis courts. There is a secret field here then bush rising up steeply. The sunlight gets in but the field holds water well. In the morning it is dew heavy and sun bathed #FunguFriends

These #lichen lignicolous and numerous. Lecanora sp. must be present but how many? #FungiFriends

This #lichen wriggling reaching farinose-sorediate podetia tapering to a point, minuscule brown/red apothecia, pale yellow to light green tip to base squamulous at base. On a railway sleeper that borders a garden in a car park #FungiFriends

This #lichen in the same location. The tennis courts’ car park. I pass by here when I walk my dog and this area calls to me over and over. So far, I keep finding new images worth taking. Same lichen types though #FungiFriend

This #lichen also hiding in the cracks of railway sleepers that border the tidy gardens that delimit the tennis club’s car park #FungiFriends

Not far from the white post, I am back in the tennis club’s car park. Where this #lichen hides in the shaded cracks of railway sleepers. Like a zombie from a grave, one eyeball watches as a bony hand waves #FungiFriends

This #lichen foliose. Long lobes (white crusty patina) long cilia (white merging to black points) black dots (potentially pycnidia??) in places the lobes burst open and the insides are exposed. All on a pebble dashed cement curb stone #FungiFriends

This #lichen on a white sign post near the tennis courts. We have our usuals hanging out. But if you look closer you will see a lot going on here #FungiFriends

Well, this #lichen! It’s base looking very much like one distinct lichen yet its ends looking quite like another!! Almost as if one was hiding inside another just waiting for the right conditions before bursting forth #FungiFriends

This #lichen a strap of blue green thallus thin flat wide. A Width narrowing at ends like a tendon where it might attach to bone. Gravity pulls this lichen straight down. The free end twisting about in search of a finish Bespeckled&crowded with satellite dish apothecia of varying sizes #FungiFriends

This #lichen was photographed in spring. I have a backlog of images, everyday lichen, to work through. These lichen dare me to name them and I walk backwards with my hand outstretched and say no, no! I do not dare name you. One day maybe. I have an inkling #FungiFriends but I am a coward

This #lichen on my cherry tree corticolous (on bark) foliose (leafy) rosette (prizewinning) thallus (main body) punctate, pseudocyphellae (sprinkled with stardust) on laminal (upper surface) brown underside. Lobes (round leafy bits) overlapping and more centrally sorediate on margins #FungiFriends

This #lichen a close up. Corticolous Foliose Leathery light green thallus. Lobes tend to raise and ruffle into almost tubes at ends with Marginal Soralia #FungiFriends

This #lichen lirelae all on the same mission and lying aligned. Mostly. Pretty picture I think because of the foliose touches not the focus #FungiFriends

In my recent posts I have stayed close to home. The #lichen are found in the city and parks where I walk my dog. I am not searching, just tuning in and learning how to look. This lichen on my radar as there are many similar here but they are not the same. Will be posting more as we go #FungiFriends

Wherever I point my camera with this bush in my garden, I see #lichen in abundance when winter comes the leaves fall and reveal this abundance. If you were unaware you might think the bush was dead and riddled with blight but the leaves return and the lichen is hidden in summer #FungiFriends

This #lichen display on my crab apple tree. The yellow (top left) like hot eyes. On the tree (middle-ish) spreading blue/green tentacles branched sinewy. Blown-out apothecia on laminal. Underneath, covering branch, a crusty rash of pink/light blue apothecia w white thaline rim #FungiFriends

This #lichen tricky. There a number of possibilities to choose from here in South Island and when I read their descriptions it isn’t easy to separate one from the other. Especially when the photo examples don’t look like the descriptions : / The differentiation my new pet project #FungiFriends

This #lichen in a tree large fat swollen black apothecia looking like the back a of wingless muscle bound flies emerging from a white crusty thallus sharing space with white rimmed pink apothecia which reminds me of a jam tart. Guess that’s why the flies #FungiFriends
