I find lichen beautiful.
Important you know that I am trying to learn by walking a very long road - happy to be educated and/or corrected
Current focus is lichen that I find around me without looking too hard. My everyday lichen
The tide comes in, washes, the tide goes out and this #lichen loves it. Crowded together, apothecia with dark yoke centres so tightly packed their shapes are squished and irregular as if pushed in to a tube train at rush hour. Thallus is ghost-like no lobes but a hint. A pale shadow #FungiFriends

Iocation: once the base of a massive shield volcano. Millions of years of erosion carved out a 22km natural harbour, where we find this #lichen #fungifriends squamulous and hanging out with moss. Looking like the squamules found with Cladonia podetia. I wish I had a better photo. Will go back

More crustose #lichen the ones with black raisins, which my mind thinks look like demons emerging out of rocks back first, limbs and head yet to follow Many lichen own these demon apothecia I’m leaving the knowing til later Blue green foliose shield lichen top right with burnt edges #FungiFriends

A pale green #lichen manoeuvres, it seems, into another’s (crustose areolate white) space. atop the other lichen the pale green seems to change from green towards yellow. surrounding top and right, going unnoticed a black areolate lichen and yet more to the left of the green #FungiFriends #Otago

This #lichen everywhere and here also - the very harbour’s edge - thriving. If I am right with identification, one of the lay terms for this lichen is stone flower. A quick search on the net and you can buy these in sealed packs to flavour your curry #FungiFriends I’ll leave this one here though

This #lichen on rocks that are washed at high tide. Thick white thallus crusty. Lirallae (fruiting bodies)with no particular directional objective or design (dashes, y shapes, x shapes and s shapes) I have read that this is a native NZ species common on our coasts #NZ #Otago #Dunedin #FungiFriends

This #lichen perhaps not totally submerged by the tide but close enough to get a good licking from its salty spray when it is high. A branched lichen looking like a miniature garden shrub; blue green fingers reaching out from its branches holding brown squishy fruit bags #FungiFriends #Otago

This #lichen drying out at low tide. Saxicolous. The whole thing is lichen looking like rock. I love that. I read that parts of this lichen are deeply embedded into its substrate. It gives off a weak acid and thrives on the minerals released by the slow chemical erosion #FungiFriends

When I post #lichen I search for it in my beginners guide or on the internet. If desperate, I will ask for help. This one is areolate, yellow to orange yellow. apothecia - yellow orange slightly darker than rim and thallus. On rock by pacific harbour looks like stars #FungiFriends

So there I am, thinking I won’t find much and the dogs now in the water and I am standing on the edge of the harbour wondering how easy will it be to dry this dog off and get back to work and then I see this #lichen looking like chalk & living an intertidal life #FungiFriends

A post by the harbour This #lichen looking pretty the top and there are more of you look closely. I wasn’t expecting to see much on this dog walk. Our harbour is busy and this end is practically in the city. So years of industry. I just thought I wouldn’t see much in the way of variety #FungiFriends

Down to the harbour for a dog walk and #lichen hunt. First up, this old favourite batting its black lashes lashes. Its ruffled lobes like waves - I thought fitting for the harbour location. The lobes lift as if the sea breeze is acting upon its thallus we can see its golden underside #FungiFriends

This #lichen green foliose with thallus seemingly all tubes, hollow fingers lifting up above one another, clamouring to get their tube mouths most exposed to the air, a clumpy lichen. On bark. Quite tiny not certain as to what it will grow up to be #FungiFriends

On a wall this #lichen so tiny it looks like a rusty stain. Look at all the lichen chums that appear when you get in close. These apothecia are less than point five of a millimetre #FungiFriends

I jump forward to this week as I was very excited to catch this #lichen on a forest walk barely taken by anyone. Trees felled from a recent storm made our way difficult and so much mud but I found a stump covered in this. The whole stump! It wasn’t small #FungiFriends

This #lichen Kapow an assault of colour from long ribbon lobes meandering to edge of its domain. Bright hot orange in the centre transitioning to a cool yellow. Surrounded by a display of hot orange gem stone lichen #FungiFriends

This #lichen attracted me with white on black contrast pattern made by the crusty, areolate white lichen with domed slightly pink apothecia growing on dark wet bark. a tiny foliose light blue/green lichen grows centrally its thallus bust open displaying soredia so young yet reproducing #FungiFriends

Still pushing through the wiry bush with my dog and here these #lichen #FungiFriends
December 18, 2025 at 7:51 AM
This #lichen foliose. can’t remember substrate - was walking through bush on Lee side of an embankment, beach and pacific on other side. Most likely a bark then. Thallus green and cool yellow. Thaline rimmed apothecia some orange inside some a little greener. Is it a green Xanthoria P. #FungiFriends

This #lichen doing its thing. Something that switches me on. The gradual transition of one colour and tone to another. In this instance, hot orange towards a cool yellow. A gentle slide from one to another. I see these colour slides everywhere and I love it - nature is an expert #FungiFriends

The dog and I took a new route. Our usual is raised up from sea level. Engineered that way. It’s all reclaimed land on one side and the Pacific on the other. This #lichen is thriving in the wiry bush on the reclaimed side of the embankment #FungiFriends this has to be the most orangey one I’ve seen.

This #lichen a mystery. Black swollen rimmed apothecia at least one on a stalk. Really not sure what I am looking at. #FungiFriends can anybody shed some light?
December 6, 2025 at 10:06 AM
This #lichen similar to previous post. Very close to ‘pink earth lichen’ in looks ‘cept it’s pink apothecia is not on stalks. Very tiny. Very close. Deep within the cracks of a thick barked tree which slowly grows by our rugby fields #FungiFriends

This #lichen protected deep in the bark crevice #FungiFriends
December 4, 2025 at 6:44 PM
This #lichen one of my favourites - not sure why. I like the weird hairs and the gnarly salty skin crusts and its gentle colour. This was on a tree that borders the sports fields. The tree had a deep creviced bark so I was enjoying the focal difference and was playing with it a little #FungiFriends
