I find lichen beautiful.
Important you know that I am trying to learn by walking a very long road - happy to be educated and/or corrected
Current focus is lichen that I find around me without looking too hard. My everyday lichen

I read #GeorgeOrwell 1984 in 1984. I was a teen It was the Cold War. I read #AnimalFarm when 11, should’ve known better. V depressing. You may guess why I have picked the book up again (I’ve also recently re-read ‘How to spot a fascist’ by #UnbertoEco) enjoying re-read. Can see what he’s up to now

I would love a Somerset cottage. No money. This isn’t an inquiry. Just the idea of it made me think it would be nice. I grew up in Street, the levels were my playground. Miss it greatly. Now on the other side of the world. Grass is always greener and an all that…good luck with the sale.

Kia ora Geoffrey, the cilia might be two tone because it is still developing - close by there were similar in every way but the cilia were all white and the whole lichen quite tiny Thinking, cilia darkens with maturity The lobes are tube like when open the insides sorediate. Wil send closeup

I and I just noticed that there are two prominent lichen here so the the one at the back is a Ramalina (not exactly certain which type) and the one at the front is everyone’s favourite Xanthoria Parietina nearly blew it again😅

I also have a sneaking suspicion that the early naming of lichen is still a little shaky. Even since I became interested I have seen some lichen renamed or classified differently because DNA sequencing gives an accuracy that appearance does not always account for. Again, sleepless nights for me.

Now I lie awake at night and worry about all the young enthusiasts who come across my early mistakes and are steered wrong A friendly lichenologist suggested I just describe them and then they can try looking them up from the description. Though my descriptions are hardly scientific I sleep better 🙂

Thank you Jenny, so this is a Ramalina. I used to try to name them. Two problems V hard to do! I am no expert. And time (i am, ashamed to say, governed by the immediacy of socials) also, many people have miss-named lichen-complicating the ID-ing and I joined them. It took a lot of effort to stop.
