A couple of roosting Long-eared Owls proved the highlight of an action-packed January on the Severnside patch. Penduline Tits, Water Pipits, White-fronted Geese, Firecrest, DB Brent, Whinchat, Brambling & Cattle Egret made up a quality supporting cast. Pic: @oscardewhurst.bsky.social #ukbirding

Along with Willow Tit; Corn Bunting; Whinchat. Bullfinch and many others declining/

Farmers killing off all the insects and not leaving seed on the ground after harvest doesn't help

Whinchat?

A problem with these 'millions targets is that it encourages the close planting of tall shady growing trees. Habitat diversity is very important. Intermix open sunny grasslands, scrub in the lowlands and uplands. Key species such as Black grouse, whinchat, adders, butterflies etc.. depend on these

Nice one and nice quartet of shots Rob!
Let me see .. yes here's one of the many but also very effective #ShortBeaks
Female Whinchat busy feeding her nestlings on the approach to Long Mynd in Shropshire in May. This lovely migrant sadly down by 60% in last 30 yrs.

Lot of change mate common birds like turtle dove; we used to get flocks of up to 100 in fields near me. Willow Tit; Whinchat; many others gone

If the Penduline Tit trio have enjoyed star billing on the Severnside patch recently, the presence of a wintering Whinchat on Northwick Warth has been no less remarkable. The first Dec/Jan record for South Glos, it has been seen skulking on the saltmarsh! Pic: @matthall95.bsky.social #ukbirding

Influence of mowing timing on the breeding success of an endangered ground-nesting migratory #bird, Whinchat (Saxicola rubetra) EurJWildRes
Influence of mowing timing on the breeding success of an endangered ground-nesting migratory #bird, Whinchat (Saxicola rubetra)
Ground-nesting birds in Europe are declining due to anthropogenic pressures that reduce breeding productivity. Agricultural intensification under the Common Agricultural Policy in Europe is a major driver of this for farmland species, including whinchat (Saxicola rubetra), in Ireland. We collected data over five breeding seasons in the Shannon Callows, a stronghold for this species where seasonal flooding limits agricultural intensification. We recorded habitat characteristics, breeding activity, and phenological events to determine population growth rates and assess mowing impacts on breeding success. Mean fledging date was July 4th (± 9.28 days). We calculate that for the population to remain stable, with 80.6% brood survival, mowing should be delayed until July 14th (+ 9.28 SD days to allow for natural variation). Previous studies indicate early mowing significantly impacts whinchat productivity. However, when modelling mowing date against whinchat breeding success weak significance was found that disappeared when increasing sample size through simulations, suggesting that mowing timing alone is not a strong determinant of reproductive success. Other factors including habitat structure, prey availability, predation risk, and weather conditions likely interact to influence breeding outcomes and warrant further study. We present a valuable framework with five years of breeding data that can inform whinchat conservation and highlight the need for longer-term studies considering additional factors including how weather conditions affect mowing and prey availability.

A windswept whinchat 🪶

Yes that's the spot - Whinchat seems to range widely on the saltmarsh beyond the pool, often keeping low in the grass
January 2, 2026 at 10:24 PM
Whereabouts are the whinchat and jack snipes hanging out? The last pool before the bend going north?
January 2, 2026 at 9:30 PM
Wintering Whinchat, 9 Jack Snipe, 8 Rock Pipit and Common Sandpiper at the north end of Northwick Warth/Cake Pill. And bonus Firecrest at Aust STW! #ukbirding

Definitely our first wintering bird. We have a strange mix of birds here at the same time: Cattle Egret, WF Geese, Bewick's, Whinchat, Common Sand, Chiffs and Blackcaps but not many any winter thrushes.
January 2, 2026 at 5:58 PM
We've got a wintering Whinchat in Norfolk too. I've never heard of them wintering before, but I can see 7 records of them on eBird in the UK between Dec-Feb over all years.

Despite missing 2 early morning Bewick's Swans, a flyover drake Red-breasted Merganser and a Firecrest, it was still an excellent #patchbirding day with wintering Whinchat, Common Sandpiper & 9 Jack Snipe including one found with a thermal imager within stepping distance. All comer year list now 86+

Not too shabby. Saw my 3 targets - White-fronts, Pendulines & Cattle Egret - and refound the wintering Whinchat. Started and finished in the dark - 63 species (no owls!). Taking granddaughter to Slimbridge tomorrow. I want Bean Geese, she'll want cafe!!

Excellent all-dayer on the Severnside patch. Penduline Tits still present, White-front flock up from 8 to 16, unseasonal Whinchat still on Northwick Warth and the Cattle Egret again on Pilning Wetland. Good to catch up with @severnsidebirds.bsky.social & @aravindramesh19.bsky.social #ukbirding

Whinchat still hanging around in South Wootton this afternoon. Maybe it really is going to spend the winter there #UKBirding #norfolkbirding #ukwildlife #birds

We were passing through King's Lynn on Christmas present delivery duties so popped into South Wootton flood and was surprised to see the Whinchat in the field at the south end. First one I've seen in December. Shame the light was so dire!
