A really beautiful morning for #UKbirding in the Aire Valley near Leeds. 60ish species, including a kingfisher giving excellent views and 6 great white egrets jostling for flight space with some grey herons. 2 peacock butterflies too. Pleasantly but also worryingly warm for November.

The Lloyds black horse sculpture by Peter Tysoe (b.1935) that used to stand outside the 1970s bank on Park Row, with an 1892 bank building in the background. During the 19th century, Park Row was transformed from a street of Georgian houses into 'The Wall Street of Leeds'. Since the turn of the millennium, many banks and offices have closed and some buildings have been converted to residential. In the same way, some digital folk who could work anywhere, are coming back to city centres to make the most of the human as well as the digital connectivity. Strange currents. what would Watt have made of it?

#UKbirding at Eccup reservoir near Leeds this morning. Very little on the water but otherwise lively on a lovely autumn morning. 28 species, including my first fieldfares and redwings of the season. 5 whooper swans overhead. Notable wood pigeon movement south.

While out on the canal this morning twice my headlight caught the eyes of an animal about 20m ahead of me. The spacing suggested something fox sized but it was in the water and dived as I got closer. Ain't no seals in the canal, is this the first sighting of The Leeds Liverpool Canal Cryptid?

OTD 1775 bad floods hit Leeds.

Our most recent serious flood was Dec 2015.
Since then, flood defences in the city centre have been completed & work is in progress on ‘natural flood management’ to reduce risk.

The River Aire, vital resource and essential trade artery for centuries, has caused damage and loss of life in Leeds on many occasions. Records only go back to the 1660s, though. 20-21 October 1775, exactly 250 years ago: the River Aire burst its banks and flooded the low-lying areas of the town of Leeds. Photo taken in February 2020 at Calls Wharf in Leeds city centre when the River Aire was very high. By that time, flood defences had been put in places throughout the city centre (completed 2017), including a 'collapsible weir' at Crown Point (and another downstream at Knostrop). When a flood event is threatened, a mechanism beside the weir deflates the bags of air under the weir and more water can escape downstream before the level rises too high on the stretch of channel in the city centre.
