#statoliths
New #OA paper in Ecological Informatics comparing automated methods for provenance assignment using chronological chemical records deposited into archival structures such as #otoliths, #lenses, #statoliths. Our focus was on #salmon but it has much broader application. doi.org/10.1016/j.ec...

In Marchantia, amyloplasts function as statoliths in parenchymatous storage cells and play an important role in gravitropism; but gravitropism is not entirely abolished in the absence of starch granules - Hashimoto-Sugimoto et al.

🌿☕Morning 🌄

I have a box of 1000 bulbs ready 🤗 one of my favourite garden jobs🌷

Did you know bulbs grow even if planted upside down as they have statocytes with statoliths that sense gravity (gravitropism) guiding shoots up & roots down, while light (phototropism) & stored energy help correct it🌷

Our acorn hero’s taproot has reached the bottom of the vase

The seedling knows which way is down (& up) as trees have gravity-sensing organelles called statoliths in their root & shoot cells

Until now the seedling has had no resistance, so what happens to the taproot now?

Most trees detect gravity using structures within the cells of their roots & shoots called statoliths. These tell them which way is up. It is known as gravitropism

Slope trees have to arrange their roots to prevent them toppling over, but they will almost always grow directly up

Simultaneously, Němec made the same observations, but added that dissolving the starch granules by placing the plants in a plaster cast would indeed result in plants that would no longer react to changes in gravity. The amyloplasts were shown to be statoliths - gravisensors.

Haha, funny you should say that! I´m planning some elemental fingerprinting shenanigans in P. marinus and L. fluviatilis in Germany in the near future. They have statoliths, not otoliths (reflect mostly juvenile growth), but microchem seems possible --> doi.org/10.1139/F08-...
Statolith microchemistry as a technique for discriminating among Great Lakes sea lamprey (Petromyzon marinus) spawning tributaries
Laurentian Great Lakes fishery management agencies are seeking ways to identify natal origins of parasitic- and spawning-phase sea lamprey (Petromyzon marinus) so that efforts to control this invasive...

Hopian the oak seedling’s existence is hanging by a thread

The thread is the taproot that is rapidly moving downwards to anchor the acorn & source water

Trees detect gravity using structures within their roots & shoots called statoliths to tell them where up & down are

They do have statoliths but I believe the research so far has been comparing geographic variations between the squids so I don’t know about the fixed rate aspect but that would certainly be interesting to look more into
May 10, 2023 at 4:32 AM
do they not have statoliths or whatever that accumulate at a fixed rate we can measure like in other cephalopods? (is that a thing in other cephalopods?)

Catalina Perales-Raya is using giant squid beaks and statoliths to figure out how old giant squid get. Based on her work and the consensus in others in the room, it’s looking like about 3 years!

Imagine the amount of food an animal needs to eat to grow so quickly!
