The amount of random "smart" comments I (or women I've been with) have gotten from strangers (all men) since I've been back in Ireland has been shocking.

When it comes to housing supply there is a big f*cking elephant in the room
Last year CSO found 65,000 homes empty for 2 yrs, using ESB data, yet for same period less than 3,000 paid the vacant homes tax
So thats around 62,000 houses waiting for someone to call them home

"Making it more difficult to bring cases to judicial review is likely to reduce the kinds of challenge that you actually want [..]: genuine public opposition [...or] severe environmental danger[.] But it won’t have anything like the same effect on cynical and strategic objections"
Great piece from @dsquareddigest.bsky.social, which touches on one of the big theories for why English-speaking countries do especially badly at housebuilding:

Adversarial and litigious common law systems (Anglo) vs judge-led civil law systems elsewhere.

More than nine-in-ten Irish people believe our country has benefitted from EU membership. 🇮🇪🇪🇺 That's the 2nd highest figure of any member state (just behind Malta). Ireland would not be as wealthy and modern a country today if we had not joined in 1973.

Germany telling France to cut social programs to fund even more defence spending...despite France being far stronger over the last 3 years in calls for stronger action on Ukraine especially cutting economic ties, something Germany has resisted every step
I'm sure the French will love that #speirgorm

AOC on why Trump returned to office: "when you have economic stagnation, for the working class that, especially in an environment where GDP is growing, that is the stuff of populist movement. The choice is what direction those populist movements can go."

Good morning, #SpeirGorm

Midterm is upon us. For me, that means I only have to think about getting myself up and out the door. The traffic will be lighter on the commute to and from work and I don’t have to look at a lunchbox for the next few days. The mental load is a little eased.

My initial feeling is that most of these people are just regular citizens who can't afford their car insurance. We're being gouged by the cartel. (Have we stopped bailing out PMPA yet?!) #SpéirGorm

Brenda Power, David Quinn, Breda O’Brien, Eilis O’Hanlon, Eoin O’Malley, Pat Leahy, any of Aontú, most of FFFG, some in SF, lots of Independents & Senators & on & on

hello humans! I have an update Dublin events spreadsheet for you. This is a bit bulked out with a subset of films from the film festival, so once again my advice is to check out the other tabs if you hate films.
