#science&politics
Ok, I was thinking about folks in politics, journalism, and science/ academia. I at least understand people staying for sports or knitting or whatever.

"When everything turns into television, every form of communication starts to adopt television’s values: immediacy, emotion, spectacle, brevity... When everything is urgent, nothing is truly important. Politics becomes theater. Science becomes storytelling. News becomes performance."
I missed this piece by @dkthomp.bsky.social which makes a much deeper case for a thing I said to @blaine.bsky.social over the summer.

Instagram shouldn't be understood as falling to be a social sharing app. It should be seen as a very successful Pocket TV.

Yeah, but it can't just be politics. Politics is how we negotiate, but love, living, and joy are expressed by science and art, and they don't serve politics. If you think they do, then you clip their wings.

The planet will outlive us all. Life and death is part of the most natural cycle of being. And yes, more people should choose to live and let live. Politics is a constant, but government doesn't have to be. 'Earth Science' exists. The planet can't be "hurt". People are the most valuable resource.

I think a "We're very sorry, teenaged girls, but you are now responsible for EVERYTHING" approach to global politics would yield some FANTASTIC results for everyone (assuming they had access to good science expert advice, which responsible girls WOULD consult EXTENSIVELY)

Political science. Politics is the science of getting along and compromising for the good of all.
We mix up politicians with greedy lobbyists and sick-o-phants and manipulators.
Hate hearing people say they're tired of politics. This is not politics, it's life or death, literally, for the planet and for all of us.

This, about how coverage of the Cass Report was handled, is pretty serious journalistic malpractice to me. You have a story in the works that will present your readership with complex reactions on a controversial piece of research and you kill it to run PR for the subject herself?

I'm also a futurist, but I think with people like trump and the demofascists that pretend to be democrats, but I want to advance science and I'm the best Theoretical Physicist on Earth 🌎 I don't have time for politics and would rather bury myself in research so give me the Nobels you guys promised!

I have a visual image of a tidal change. There have been so many advances in science, and we have so much history to draw from.
But the tide is changing, education is slipping, science takes a backseat to opinion, and politics becomes an implement for the ultra wealthy.

Watched Oppenheimer yesterday. Good to see science depicted as entwined with politics: from political will to fund certain kinds of science, through disciplinary (including intergenerational) politics, to the personal politics of career-building for scientists & politicians. Science is social.

Hell yes to this. I read when I want to read, and I am not focused on numbers. I read long-form periodical pieces, novels, narrative non-fiction, history, popularized science, politics, and increasingly some poetry. And some days I fire up Steam and play games.

Ok, I know its cliché but new years is always such a good time for resolutions. I like to set my intentions. So here's a thread 🧵

1. I want to use Bsky to talk more about science and less about politics. I know the 2 are deeply intertwined now, but I can't take the political side right now.

The centrist compulsion to reject being perceived as "ideological" or "taking sides" means a rejection of facts and their place in making decisions. In doing so they make politics explicitly ideology-driven where facts have no place. To be centrist is to always side against science and justice.
Terrific defence of centrism by Oliver Johnson, quoting Kenneth “Civilisation” Clark bristoliver.substack.com/p/in-defence...

Happy new year! I'm so thrilled to share the FIRST of many incredible articles in Science Politics this month! It's an honor to magnify the work of Lucy Marcil-a pediatrician who realized her work in the clinic had to extend to people's pocketbooks.
