Of the 120 people indicted for the the riot, most were never prosecuted, and none served jail time. This event was part of a pattern of race riots and white-supremacist motived violence called the #RedSummer of 1919, which was itself an outgrowth of the virulently anti-communist #FirstRedScare.

But instead of being silenced, many Black communities fought back. ✊🏿 Their resistance turned terror into determination, fueling new waves of self-defense, political organizing, and the fight against segregation.

"Pull a standard U.S. history textbook off the shelf & you’re unlikely to find more than a paragraph on #RedSummer; what you do find downplays both racism and Black resistance, while distorting facts in a dangerous 'both sides' framing." -- Ursula Wolfe-Rocca @ladyofsardines.bsky.social
