It’s a great evening for some quizbowl, 40 years(!) of the West Suburban Conference Championship edition

LOL that is 100% true. It leads me to asking a lot of "wait what actually happens in that?" but I certainly know a lot of titles.

Reminds me of quizbowl where you'd learn a lot about architects & boring 18th century English novels just from hearing them come up so much

I met Josh way back in 2002 when we were in honors geology together at the University of Arkansas. I invited him to join the UofA's quizbowl team, and now he's a 7-time Jeopardy champ (ok, maybe I can't take all the credit), and he will be back on the show next week for the Invitational Tournament!
The @jeopardyofficial.bsky.social Invitational Tournament starts TODAY, and I will take the Alex Trebek Stage on Wednesday, February 11th - but you definitely want to watch ALL the matches in this tournament - they're gonna be AWESOME!!! How awesome? I can't say... you have to tune in and find out!

Expedition Log, Day 5: Today the shortwave radio picked up a signal from a high school quizbowl team stranded in the city library; they said something about wolves and then broke for commercial. I mean, then the transmission went dead. I cannot risk my own safety to attempt a rescue mission.

yeah, particularly with success on the show already being effectively restricted to teams from unis that do quizbowl - in the years that quizbowl has been a thing in the UK, no university that doesn't/didn't partake in it has ever won a series.

When interviewed by AETN (now Arkansas TV) for a segment during the 1999 state high school quizbowl finals, I responded that my "dream job" was to be Chairman of the Federal Reserve.

I've been throwing around the idea of writing a guide to quizbowl writing *mechanics* for a while! Hopefully I'll actually get around to writing it in some form soon. I think a good way to approach it would probably be to use a bunch of illustrative examples of what not to do and how to fix them.
December 24, 2025 at 5:58 AM
I feel like "this non-(x)" and "it's not (x), but" were holdovers from 80s and 90s quizbowl writing that stubbornly persisted because they didn't get pushed out by editors like a lot of other things of that era.
December 24, 2025 at 1:32 AM
Yeah, there's an ongoing phenomenon of writers assuming that jargon is just "what quizbowl is supposed to sound like," and using it even when writing bonuses or other nonpyramidal questions. I'm not sure how to push back against this, especially with so few resources anywhere for writer development.
December 24, 2025 at 12:14 AM
But the problem with jargon is that work avoided by the writer becomes work imposed on the players. If we want quizbowl to be accessible and educational, we shouldn't be asking players to master arcane language conventions, or make it difficult for them to understand clues read aloud at game speed.
December 23, 2025 at 7:46 PM
Festivus grievances about quizbowl jargon:

The use of "names" to mean "is the namesake of," instead of "gave a name to." A phrase like "he named his son John" shouldn't be confusing!

Using "played" to turn an actor's name into an adjective. "The Matthew McConaughey-played bartender" - aaarrggh.
