SMS Zähringen was the third of the Wittelsbach-class pre-dreadnought battleships built for the Imperial German Navy. Laid down in 1899, and completed in October 1902. During most of her active career, she served with I Squadron of the German fleet . She was decommissioned in September 1910, but returned to service briefly for training in 1912, where she accidentally rammed and sank a torpedo boat. With the start of World War One, Zähringen was moved to active duty serving with IV Battle Squadron along with her sisters Wittelsbach, Wettin, Schwaben, and Mecklenburg. She saw limited duty in the North Sea and in the Baltic against Russia, including the Battle of the Gulf of Riga, although she saw no combat with Russian forces. The threat from British submarines and a shortage of crew forced the ship to be withdrawn from the Baltic in 1916. For the remainder of the war, Zähringen served as a target ship for torpedo training. She was retained by the German Navy post-war and converted to a radio controlled target ship. She was used in this capacity until 1944, when she was sunk by British bombers in Gotenhafen. Retreating German forces raised the ship and moved her to the harbor mouth, where they scuttled her to block the port. Zähringen was broken up in situ in 1949–50.

The semi-dreadnought battleship tends to be overshadowed by the all big gun dreadnought. Like their predreadnought predecessors, the semi-dreadnought carried four 12 inch guns but had a very heavy secondary armament as well.
Here are three examples of this type (descriptions in ALT).

The Aki, laid down just before Tsushima. She and her sister Satsuma were designed to carry twelve 12 inch guns, but the costs proved prohibitive, so they were equtwelipped with four 12 inch guns fore and aft and twelve ten inch guns in twin wing turrets. Satsuma was equipped with triple expansion engines while Aki was the first Japanese battleship to have turbine propulsion. The Lord Nelson and her sister Agamemnon mounted four 12 inch guns fore and aft and ten 9.2 inch guns in wing turrets (four doubles, two singles). Their construction was delayed by their 12 inch guns and turrets being sent to finish Dreadnought. Were driven by triple expansion engines. The Danton class were six French semi-dreadnoughts built between 1907 and 1911. They carried the traditional four 12 inch guns and a secondary armament of twelve 9.4 inch guns in wing turrets. The Dantons were the first turbine driven battleships in the Marine Nationale.

Favorite ship design of this run so far are the Habsburg class. This is the third iteration of the game and it still sort of has a fit when you design semi-dreadnoughts. The game has forced these two to be classified as B (predreadnought) as laid down, & BC (battlecruiser) after their later refits.
Rule The Waves 3 screenshot, showing a ship called "Arpad", which the game refers to as an "AUSTRIAN BATTLE-CRUISER." It (and its sister) are semi-dreadnoughts on the Satsuma model, with four 11 inch guns in A and Y positions, and three twin 10-inch turrets on both sides amidships. The only thing preventing this from being classified as a full dreadnought battleship (BB) is that the big gun armament is not uniform. NB - this is the currently serving version of the ship, last refit in 1921, with new oil-fired steam turbines and even a few antiaircraft guns. The seven battle stars on the right show it has been heavily used. The next refit (if it survives) will add an improved director, more AA, ditch the torpedo tubes. HMS Devastation was the lead ship of her class of mastless ironclad turret ships built for the Royal Navy. Along with her sister HMS Thunderer (1872), she was the first class of ocean-going capital ships that did not carry sails, and the first in which the entire main armament was mounted on top of the hull rather than inside it. Devastation served around the United Kingdom and Mediterranean. In 1891, she underwent a refit, where her 12-inch muzzle loading guns were replaced with 10-inch breech loaders. she was also refitted with new triple-expansion steam engines. She later served as the guard ship for Gibraltar from 1901 to 1902. She then returned to the UK where 21 June 1902 she was recommissioned as a tender to the torpedo school ship HMS Vernon. She was broken up in 1908.

Just finished on Kindle French Warships in the Age of Steam 1859-1914 by Stephen S Roberts.

Lots of lovely nerdy engineering detail, a lot of which I admit went over my head but did not lessen my learning or fascination. This book really helps explain why the French did their thing.

French predreadnought Charles Martel. Words cannot describe its awfulness, so imagine instead a man trapped in an invisible box, screaming silently. Forever. Yup. That's the vibe. Ironclad Marceau. Or at least we assume it's somewhere under the enormous cloud of black soot. It had the usual French design cues of outrageous tumblehome and wing turrets etc, but then you notice it's absolutely tiny. It's like somebody tried breeding a battleship you could carry in your handbag.
