This decision is almost as bad as French predreadnought designs.

German Pre-Dreadnought Battleship Zähringen. She saw limited service in WW1, but post war served as a target ship until 1944 when sunk by RAF bombers. www.destinationsjourney.com/historical-m... #MaritimeHistory #NavalHistory #SMSZähringen #Battleship #PreDreadnought #WW1

Un jour = un prédreadnought à la gueule invraisemblable. Rien qu'avec la marine française y a cher moy.

The semi-dreadnought battleship tends to be overshadowed by the all big gun dreadnought. Like their predreadnought predecessors, the semi-dreadnought carried four 12 inch guns but had a very heavy secondary armament as well.
Here are three examples of this type (descriptions in ALT).

Favorite ship design of this run so far are the Habsburg class. This is the third iteration of the game and it still sort of has a fit when you design semi-dreadnoughts. The game has forced these two to be classified as B (predreadnought) as laid down, & BC (battlecruiser) after their later refits.

Just finished on Kindle French Warships in the Age of Steam 1859-1914 by Stephen S Roberts.

Lots of lovely nerdy engineering detail, a lot of which I admit went over my head but did not lessen my learning or fascination. This book really helps explain why the French did their thing.

20 long years. But so worth the wait.
Before anyone rants about the gap, read the moving intro, inc. the thanks expressed by the author to people who have helped him personally and the process to complete this extraordinary series.

It amuses me that the Battleship piece in Monopoly is rather clearly a French predreadnought.

Talking of old school battleships that will absolutely fuck you up, here's HMS Agamemnon...

That said, it was obsolescent whilst still on the slipway. A bit on the nose for a sub that's taken a decade to build...

Nelson got a ship of the line, an armored cruiser, a predreadnought, a battleship and a shore establishment named after him.
Collingwood got a ship of the line, an ironclad, a dreadnought and a shore establishment named after him.
