FYI: Ask your installer for power outage capabilities.

You need a (small) battery and appropriate gateway to run solar for the whole house during a power outage - due to safety concerns for the grid.

Alternatively some inverters offer backup power points that don't require a battery.

Oh wait, there was another update at 7:00am:

"
7a Waimea Kohala Mt Rd/N Kohala update: ~2123 customers remain without power as crews will need to safely complete investigations in the daylight hours. This outage is NOT PSPS or Public Safety Power Shutoff. Mahalo for your patience.
"

So, no news :(

Tesla is very suspect, but Waymo's early record in San Francisco had a higher crash rate than Tesla's has so far in Austin.

Waymo has now driven ~40 million VMT without a safety driver in SF and their record is more spotty than sparkling, eg their massive collapse in December during a power outage.

Fire watch isn’t just “extra security”—it’s a code‑driven safeguard that activates when fire alarms or sprinklers are impaired beyond NFPA thresholds. Those requirements force you to patrol, document, and act, turning a system outage into a structured safety process. dahlcore.com/blog/f/nfpa-...

"What lends further urgency to these discussions are where matters go beyond kitchen table economics and reach into matters of public safety, a place where PG&E has an at best dubious record. San Francisco’s power outage is the latest in a string of disasters caused by PG&E"
The Liberal Case for Public Power
When power is treated as a public good, it becomes cheaper, more reliable, and better positioned to meet the challenges of the future than privately held electrical utilities have ever demonstrated.

Remember when a third of the city experienced a blackout over the holidays, with many not having power for several days?

During that outage Mayor Lurie pushed for power to be restored at the Opera House b/c his teenage daughter was performing there in The Nutcracker.

They won't do it well, but we're inching towards replacing various driving jobs. Sure, a Waymo will hit children in school zones, drive passengers through armed standoffs, and just not work during a power outage, but quality/safety aren't the points; CEOs and other executives make *a lot* of money.

Or it will sit in the intersection until the internet outage ends, and then eventually begin moving sometime after its return.

That is not a safety feature, that’s a massive design flaw

If there's a crisis communications plan in place for a weather disaster that creates a major outage that involves complicated and time-consuming repairs and serious safety issues, it has utterly failed.

Power outages cost more than we tend to think.

Businesses close, transportation systems and supply chains stall, refrigerated goods and medicines spoil, and residents’ health, safety, and wellbeing suffer.
