#MedSky Nitisinone could open up new avenues to stop the spread of diseases like malaria and dengue. The poisoning process blocks an enzyme mosquitoes need to process proteins and amino acids in blood & can work by simply being on surfaces mosquitoes land on.

The β-triketone, nitisinone, kills insecticide-resistant mosquitoes through cuticular uptake | Parasites & Vectors, 31.07.2025 https://parasitesandvectors.biomedcentral.com/articles/10.1186/s13071-025-06939-0   Image : Graphical Abstract

Even walking on surfaces coated with the drug is enough to kill them. This breakthrough could help fight mosquito-borne diseases like malaria. Researchers are now exploring ways to use nitisinone in things like bed nets or screens to protect people from bites.

Scientists have discovered that a drug called nitisinone, originally used to treat rare diseases, can kill mosquitoes. When mosquitoes drink the blood of someone who has taken the drug, they die within hours because it blocks their ability to digest the blood properly.

A study found that the drug nitisinone works as a potent contact insecticide for killing the mosquito species that spread malaria, dengue, and other emerging mosquito-borne viral threats, offering hope of a new approach to combating insecticide resistance. #AMR

The approach yes.

Ivermectin itself no, because it does not kill Aedes vectors of arboviruses as well as it kills Anopheles that transmit malaria.
But there are other systemic insecticides such as Nitisinone, which could do the trick www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...

10. A malaria drug might be hiding in plain sight. When mosquitoes feed on blood from people taking nitisinone—a drug for a rare disorder—they die. It blocks an enzyme they need to breakdown tyrosine, which builds up in toxic amounts and kills them.
