Several erigonine spiders (Linyphiidae) think the width of the opening of a purple pitcher plant pitcher is the perfect size to build a web. Not the safest web location, though.

Also S. purpurea may be used by the invasive Asian tiger mosquito, Aedes albopictus, as an oviposition site!

Bathyphantes nigrinus, tiny spider from leaf litter.

“Bathys” means deep in Greek, and “phantes” refers to appearing. In a bit of a mystical way since both “phantom” and “fantasy” arise from that word.

So Bathyphantes spiders emerge from the deep. #linyphiidae #spidermacro

The complete mitochondrial genome of Erigone atra Blackwall, 1833 (Araneae, Linyphiidae) Abstract The mitochondrial genome of Erigone atra Blackwell, Citation1833 has been completely sequenced and annotated for the first time. This species is found primarily in the continental north-temperate zone and has also been reported from the Galapagos Islands where it is likely an adventive species. For two specimens collected in the Czech Republic, DNA was extracted using a Qiagen DNEasy Blood and Tissue kit, then sequenced on an Illumina NovaSeq 6000 for 250 bp paired-end reads.

RE-DISCOVERY #2

Our trip to Okefenokee NWR has resulted in another re-discovery of a long-lost species. Ceratinopsis sutoris Bishop & Crosby 1930 was last seen in 1927 (98 years ago!) and we collected several males and females. The species has a orange-red carapace with black around the eyes.

The spider genus Stictonanus Millidge, 1991 in the Juan Fernandez Archipelago (Araneae, Linyphiidae): systematics and biogeography  We studied the systematics of the Juan Fernandez linyphiid species originally classified in the genus Juanfernandezia Koçak & Kemal, 2008. In an earlier study, we had hypothesized that the two Juanfernandezia species, each endemic to a single island, form a clade that was sister to the southern South American genus
