Cyclosa mulmeinensis, the spider inspired by camels.🐫

No, just kidding! Orb-web weavers existed much before camels. So it must be the camels who borrowed from C. mulmeinensis the cool idea of sporting two humps in the back.

Pachygnatha listeri female from Central Finland. Literally, “pachygnatha” means thick jaws, and you can see why in the second photo. Named after naturalist Martin Lister (1639–1712), P. listeri likes to live in the low vegetation of damp forest areas. #tetragnathidae #spidersky

Viime vuonna päätin uudistaa yleistajuisia matikkaesityksiäni niin, etteivät ne tuntuisi luennolta tai oppitunnilta.

Meiju Paxin kanssa käsikirjoitimme show’n ”Harrastajan matematiikka”.

Tervetuloa YouTubeen katsomaan aivan uudenlaista tiedeviestintää!

Yellow-legged wolf spider Pardosa fulvipes.

These nimble buggers prefer Eastern Europe: they have never been found west of Germany and Italy. At my summer cottage in Central Finland P. fulvipes are plentiful. #lycosidae #spidermacro

Bathyphantes nigrinus, tiny spider from leaf litter.

“Bathys” means deep in Greek, and “phantes” refers to appearing. In a bit of a mystical way since both “phantom” and “fantasy” arise from that word.

So Bathyphantes spiders emerge from the deep. #linyphiidae #spidermacro

Uloborus plumipes: spider without venom.

Usually spiders kill their prey by injecting venom with fangs. But some species wrap an insect with super tangled silk into a tight package and cover it with digestive fluid. After a while the soup is ready.

Spiders of family Pholcidae have specific eye arrangement: clusters of three eyes on the sides, and two eyes in the middle.

Many species, including Carapoia lutea shown here, have really long slender legs. This has earned them the nickname “daddy long legs spiders”.
