Enjoying point blank views of this gorgeous Firecrest at Sandwick, Shetland on Wednesday when it was joined by a second individual! Unlike their commoner cousins, Firecrests are much rarer here with only a handful of records every year.

𝗣𝗶𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗗𝗲𝘀𝗰𝗿𝗶𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 (𝗘𝗻𝗴): A tiny Common Firecrest, one of the smallest birds in European avifauna, perched on a bush branch by the side of a path in the countryside near the village of Martínez in the backcountry of Spain. It has yellowish-green plumage, a pale belly, and distinctive orange and black stripes on its head, along with a eye mask-like marking with a white eyebrow above its orbs. The background appears blurred in soft shades of green and brown. 𝗗𝗲𝘀𝗰𝗿𝗶𝗽𝗰𝗶𝗼́𝗻 (𝗘𝘀𝗽): Diminuto Reyezuelo Listado, uno de los pajaritos más pequeños de la avifauna europea, posado sobre la rama de un arbusto en el margen de un camino del monte del pueblo abulense de Martínez. La luna creciente iluminó el cielo el 2 de noviembre, apenas dos días antes de la gran espectáculo lunar que hubiera sido la Luna del Cazador, y que no pude ver debido al tiempo lluvioso.

𝗣𝗶𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗗𝗲𝘀𝗰𝗿𝗶𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 (𝗘𝗻𝗴): A Southern Scarce Swallowtail perched on a rosemary flower, its wings spread showing its characteristic black and white striped pattern and the distinctive elongated tail on its hindwings. Apparently, although this is a matter of debate, this Southern Swallowtail (I. feisthamelii) is a distinct species from the European Scarce Swallowtail (I. podalirius), which occurs only on the Iberian Peninsula. 𝗗𝗲𝘀𝗰𝗿𝗶𝗽𝗰𝗶𝗼́𝗻 (𝗘𝘀𝗽): Mariposa Chupaleches posada sobre una flor de romero, con las alas extendidas mostrando su característico patrón de franjas negras y blancas y la distintiva cola alargada en las alas posteriores. Al parecer, aunque esto es objeto de debate, la Chupaleches es una especie diferente de la Podalirio europea que se da únicamente en la península Ibérica. 𝗗𝗲𝘀𝗰𝗿𝗶𝗽𝗰𝗶𝗼́𝗻 (𝗘𝘀𝗽): Mariposa Chupaleches libando el néctar de las flores de romero, con las alas vistas de perfil sobre un fondo verde difuminado. Este ejemplar ha perdido las prolongaciones de las alas en forma de cola de golondrina (que le dan nombre en inglés).
