Dang it, I forgot alt text on that one, although the post kind of covers it. Alt text: a pink and gold sunrise pierced by a church spire in near-silhouette above a snowy town scape

And here's Knocknarea and Queen Maeve's tomb in the snowy sunrise 🥰 #speirgorm #sneachta #Sligo #Ireland

biggest disappointment 2025
pain to power by maruja

after the hype buildup from their transporting and evocative post-rock eps knocknarea and connla's well i was expecting more than tepid can't-we-all-just-get-along wrippity-wraps from their full-length debut

If it weren't for Ciel I'd probably end up with one of the 5* BBs as Extra 1. For Extra 2 I'm torn, it's really hard to pass up Knocknarea, and I'm a fan of Molay as well. If Knocknarea was in her story outfit I wouldn't know what to do

1. Maruja - Pain To Power

I first discovered Maruja with their 2023 EP 'Knocknarea', which I thought was an incredible addition to the UK 'windmill scene' & jazz-rock canon. But truly, I was anxiously waiting for them to put out their debut album and realize their full potential -

My sister and I took a midwinter’s hike up Knocknarea. Just as stunning as in summer, in a different way.

9. Maruja - Pain to Power

Been following them since Knocknarea, all their EPs were incredible, they worked surprisingly well on Quadeca's LP, was always waiting for this debut LP and they delivered. Another one that's needed for our times.

Have a #painting. "Knocknarea III" came out of my annual visits to County Sligo where I get to visit the iconic mountain. This is a view from the south as you wend along the coast - which I recommend you do, ideally on a bicycle. #art #SpeirGhorm #ArtYear

There are so many echoes of Yeats -MacNeice was in Ireland working on his fine book on him when the war began- 'ceremony', 'Knocknarea', 'bones', 'intricacies', maybe even that last word 'kin' which has ominous connotations in Yeats.

Catherine Connolly climbed Knocknarea mountain in Sligo and didn't bring a stone up with her.

Knocknarea was about five miles away as the crow flies. The mountain was often capped with a cloud, obscuring the cairn, and sometimes hidden entirely by rain or mist. But in my dream, it was a clear day, and the cairn was visible.
