With so much rain in recent weeks, we haven't been out and about as much as we'd like. So it was nice to get a good family walk through the local woods at Carey's Castle today.

It was lovely to hear all the birdsong and see the signs of Spring, like the hazel catkins.

Teampall Bheanáin • Inis Mór

The tiny church known as Teampall Bheanáin is one of the smallest in Ireland, measuring just over 3m x 2m.

The remains of clocháns and the stump of a round tower can still be seen nearby, hints and remnants of a once significant monastery.

The Knowth Macehead • c.3300-2800 BC

It has been described as one of the greatest surviving artworks from Neolithic Europe.

All six sides of the flint macehead are delicately decorated. From this view, it appears like a human face, with the hole for the shaft as a mouth.

The Giant's Grave • Cavan Burren • c.2500 BC

This wedge tomb is imbued with a local legend of a giant who was competing for the love of a giantess.

He attempted to jump over the nearby gorge (known as the Giant’s Leap) but fell to his death, and he was buried in this tomb.

Loher Stone Fort is beautifully situated on Kerry's Iveragh Peninsula, with wonderful views over Ballinskelligs Bay.

It was once the home of an important family during the early medieval period and likely to have been constructed sometime around c700–1100 AD.

The West Cross • Kilfenora • Clare

When it was founded in c.1152, Kilfenora Cathedral was the centre of the smallest diocese in medieval Ireland.

Though small, Kilfenora is rich in historic features, and the site had as many as six high crosses.

This is the impressive c.4.5m tall West Cross.

Jet Necklace • Derry

This is part of a c.4000 year old necklace made of jet found at Cumber, County Derry.

The jet is likely to have come from Northern England, showing trade links across the Irish Sea in the Bronze Age.

You can see this wonderful artefact in the National Museum of Ireland.
