Brixham was the port of choice, announcing their arrival by shouting very loudly. It was practice for a deckhand to remove the top of the starboard door & put it in the crows nest before going beneath to call at the top of his voice at the harbourmaster. Hence the phrase "jamb on top, scream below"

The best part is, the rest of the rubble was used by the harbourmaster (it was shot in one of the large sheds on the waterfront) to build an actual dam on his property further up north.

That got me thinking of the Tasman Bridge clearance. The beam of the ferry is 32m, the maximum permitted ships beam to transit the bridge is 32.31m without special permission from the Harbourmaster.
