The SATADOM in my FreeNAS mini XL died. If I need to replace that, I might as well investigate alternate BSD-based NAS software. I know a few folks tried to build # FreeBSD -based successors to # freenas Did any of them get traction? # sysadmin

Where did you fit them? How big is each drive?
And what OS did you choose?
FreeNAS/TrueNAS?

Very true, and with tail scale it doesn't have to be private cloud it could just be FreeNAS for accessing data and other normal services run by the server. Though having a private cloud like Nextcloud you're still forced to use SSL/TLS if you want to access cloud even if private.

@jamesoff I’ve been using FreeNAS (FreeBSD based, renamed TrueNAS Core) and recently I’ve migrated it to TrueNAS Scale (Linux based). There was always something wrong with Time Machine backups - usually around ZFS snapshots created on the server.

my first NAS was an old pc using FreeNAS (now called TrueNAS). Any old pc will work and let you save some money for getting better HDDs. The off the shelf systems you can get are great if you're not particularly good at figuring out tech stuff, but yeah. Expensive!

So just dicking about, spare parts #TrueNAS box is 25.10.0.1 and the N100 is #Proxmox 9. I'm using boomshankerx's proxmox-truenas repo and I am thriving. The only sticky wicket? Does it work with HA because TheGrandWazoo's freenas-proxmox does not.

Freenas is perfectly fine

Un raid? Freenas? Truenas? Do I know anyone with opinions on this topic? Would love your input.

Aside, it is a shame that classic FreeBSD-based TrueNAS has been EOLed now. The successor to the original FreeNAS project, XigmaNAS, continues to be based on FreeBSD, but it is extremely niche in comparison/I’m not sure how good support can be with such a small community

I think it is. The main reason I run freenas/truenas rather than just plain FreeBSD is so I don't have to worry about dealing with Samba configurations. I also appreciate not dealing with NFS stuff too much, although I'm much more comfortable than that.

TrueNAS is configured through a web UI.

Dunno how far along the journey you are, but I've used FreeNAS, and have since moved on to TrueNAS for a 60TB media storage solution. My choice was pretty cheap (comparatively, considering the storage size.) But you can really nerd out on backups and security.

it’s still running “freenas” lol

@siracusa FreeNAS was basically renamed to TrueNAS, so the former does not really exist (as a supported OS) anymore.

Was just working on building a freenas in a.co/d/dMeZv7s with ~60tb capacity. If you wanna talk about the technical side let me know. Been doing this professionally for more years than I care to admit.

If you're just running a Plex server you could pretty easily convert the device to a mainline Linux distro like debian without much fuss, or just install like freeNAS or some such server OS.

Why do I feel strangely called out...

Oh yeah. I'm running this computer on arch and working on a FreeNAS Scale box.

TMZ reports that Lil Nas X is now facing years in prison as he has been charged with 4 felonies, including battery with injury on a police officer.

And not too difficult to set up! We have a @plex.tv media server running on FreeNAS and it’s been working great. Highly recommend it.

Do you remember how you first encountered FreeBSD?

For some, it was their dialup ISP, for others it was tinkering with pfSense or FreeNAS at home. For many, it was realizing giants like Netflix leaned on FreeBSD to stream content worldwide.

Yeah, self hosting is pretty cool. More complicated than using google services but I've already noticed significant improvements to music/podcast streaming.

As the other commenter pointed out, if you can get your hands on functional e-waste you can just scoot like freeNAS or ubuntu server on there.

FYI if you have a #synology (or #qnap or #freenas, whatever) installing #tailscale on your #nas is _much_ more safer (and private) than relying on any remote-access solution that your NAS vendor provides (Synology QuickConnect, myQNAPcloud, etc.)

FreeNAS/TrueNAS Core. There's lots of options out there but imo this is the best for what you want. Scale is a trap don't use that.

Habe überwiegend mit #freenas bzw. #truenas zu tun. Heute ist nun aber der Fall eingetreten, dass ich mir ein #synology reinpfeifen muss. #nas
