Adjacent to this, if one is to have Garuda in their fantasylands - making them people with feathered hair (literally) is absolutely something we don't get enough of.
I understand the appeal of bird heads. But there's really something to having them be just another dude. Makes schisms more intimate.

I guess I'll also add the caveat that these are all set in medieval fantasylands where patriarchy is really strong, and that despite the explicit yuri, there's still stuff that makes me go 'oof' since obviously the MCs aren't educated in queer theory

Fantasylands lycanthropy (and broader therianthropy) really lacks the sort of nuance it deserves. Ridden-style possession myths with a high focus on untempered symbol-driven behavior, body horror / horror of potential, and how it plays into cyclical violence / mythic cycles?
