Round the corner from Longton Station, Staffordshire is Grade II listed Boundary Pottery Works with a super weighbridge surviving under the arch. The milepost is also listed separately. Window at top is a Diocletian Window and the one in the middle is a Palladian window.

Honestly. Diocletian has his faults and he made some serious mistakes.

But I kinda do appreciate his logic.
At least in some ways.

Like. The idea of dealing with an oversized empire by having junior Emperors localised in different regions to speed up orders and reaction times from the -

I’m pretty sure he lived to see the system fail but I can’t recall off the top of my head if Diocletian was still around when Constantine truly ended it.

I would say probably not…?
Almost definitely not…?

But he was definitely still alive to see its initial collapsing state anyway.

5 — It was also Diocletian who introduced the idea of the Tetrarchy.

Basically: Big Empire is too slow. So, let’s have 4 Emperors = quick orders, regional oversight, less spread out.

It worked while Diocletian was around. But he retired and it died. 90% sure he even lived to see it happen too.

4 — Then you get Diocletian.

By his time Rome was a mess and it didn’t have the time to maintain the Republican facade anymore. So, he really formalised and entrenched the autocratic regime Rome had become.

It was.

The Emperor. Guider of the state.

It became.

The Emperor. Your Lord and Master.

Never knew about Diocletian! Ty! He's the first Roman emperor to ever abdicate his throne voluntarily! Total gigachad. 🤴👑

PSA: I've made a final decision.

Diocletian>Constantin>Romulus f'ing Augustulus>Theodosius>Julian

This decision is binding as of right now.

Thank you for your attention to this matter.

(Yeah, I'm relistening to the History of Rome podcast by @mikeduncan.bsky.social )

It was definitely true with Christianity, but also in the 4th century The Church fell into the larger Imperial Roman project of government monopoly of religion as a form of tightening social control, whether it was traditional Roman religion under Diocletian or Christianity under Constantine
What do you think Thomas Paine meant when he said, "Persecution is not an original feature in any religion; but it is always the strongly marked feature of all religions established by law." From Rights of Man (1791). Do you think he was right?

I looked into it a bit, and it seems the dragon story was borrowed from another saint (one of the Theodores, another soldier saint apparently martyred under Diocletian), and it has ties to Thracian horseman iconography and other pre-Christian stories, so seems there's a lot of borrowing going on.

I have a very weird relationship with Haile Selassie, the Emperor Diocletian and 18th century English garden design for pretty much exactly this reason.

I do not think it's right to say that this isn't True Christianity, because this kind of thought has been one of the most mainstream and durable forms of Christianity since like Diocletian; I think people will have to accept that there is a mode of Christianity that exists for this purpose,
