I wrote this piece on how saunas could help clean Ireland’s waterways and make us healthier about a year ago.

It is as relevant today!

I also kept coming back to #BlueHealth, and to Dublin, a city shaped by water, yet strangely disconnected from it.

Happy Sunday ☀️

New Substack out on #BlueHealth and the role of urban #BlueSpaces.

Dublin’s waterways hold enormous potential to support health and wellbeing for all.

What’s missing? Political will, vision, and ambition.
Why I swim in Oslo, but not in Dublin
Since coming back to Oslo for Christmas, I’ve done something I would never dare do in Dublin: go for a swim in the city centre.

Make your voice heard!

The people of Dublin deserve a world class lido!
#BlueHealth 🌊
Let’s bring a public Lido to George’s Dock that’s affordable, inclusive and respectful of this iconic site’s heritage 🌊.

The Council is finally asking what the public wants — and this is our chance to be heard!

Please complete the survey today:

➤ Choose “Recreation”
➤ Then select “Swimming Pool”

Even if politics is not your thing, the interview with Graham Platner (an oysterman running for the US senate) is one of the best I’ve heard when it comes to the healing powers of the ocean.

💧 Last weekend’s #LiffeySwim should act as a reminder of what we are missing in Dublin.

While cities across Europe are reclaiming their #BlueSpaces for swimming, we continue to treat ours like an open sewer.

It’s time to imagine, no demand, a swimmable Dublin. 🌊

I got mine at CVS in the Twin Cities through Minnesotacare! My buddy who has Bluehealth Blue Shield was told CVS isn’t contracted with them, but was able to make a Walgreens appt instead.

Interestingly, M Health Fairview pharmacies do not have any ‘25 - ‘26 COVID vax stock, only flu
Actually, if you have managed to get vaccinated in the past week, and you're comfortable sharing where, please do drop it in the replies here! It is such chaos out there, even in the same town from place to place!

I got mine at the Bessemer Walgreens in Alabama!
Thank you! In Ohio and have been looking for this info.

One of our favorite conversations this past week:
Some people don’t need studies to know water heals. But for those who do? The science is catching up. 🧠🌊
We took a look at “Blue Health” and “Blue Mind.”
Catch up here: 👇
#OceanHoptimism #BlueHealth #MentalHealth
One of Ocean Hoptimism’s core values is this: protecting the ocean also means protecting each other. 🧠🌊
Mental health isn’t a side quest. So we’ve been diving into “Blue Health” and “Blue Mind” science to ask:
Is this real? Or just wet wellness woo? Let’s go.

We said it this morning, but it’s worth repeating:
Protecting the ocean also means protecting each other. 🧠🌊
Mental health isn’t a bonus round. It’s core to conservation.
Let’s keep the #BlueMind & #BlueHealth convo going.

But. Some caution flags:
🔹 Many studies are correlational
🔹 Sample sizes are small
🔹 Effects vary by context: wild coast ≠ urban fountain
🔹 Some claims get ahead of the data
We love hope. But we need measured, evidence-based hope.

There is a growing evidence base. Exposure to “blue space” (oceans, rivers, coasts) is linked to reduced anxiety, better mood, even improved sleep.
Therapeutic surf programs? Ocean walks? Shown to help with PTSD, depression, and addiction.

his is what a healthier, greener, more sustainable and people-friendly Dublin could look like.

This is a liveable Dublin.

The Grand Canal Docks and Liffey could be so much more—spaces for people, nature, and sustainable transport.

This area has huge potential, but it's mostly wasted.

Time for change!

Our ocean, our health.

Polluted seas and dying marine life don’t just hurt nature, they harm us.

We need strong, standalone legislation for Marine Protected Areas. No watered-down laws. No backtracking.

See our letter to Minister Christopher O’Sullivan below.

A swim with a view of the Eiffel Tower 😍

This is the level of ambition we need in Dublin. Swimming in Dublin's canals and the Liffey shouldn't be a risky activity, but something that's safe, comfortable, and easily accessible for all!
