Ocean Hoptimism jumps ahead a week earlier once again—Dec 18—to dodge the holiday chaos and deliver a December surprise.
We won’t tell you who’s speaking yet… but you’ll definitely be talking about it afterward. For now, just this clue.

Tonga may soon recognize whales as legal persons, honoring ancient ties, protecting vital ocean kin, and setting a global first. A move that says whales aren’t resources but relatives with a right to thrive. A powerful step for culture, climate, and conservation.

Liz Taylor shared an extraordinary image last night: manganese nodules grown around fossilized shark teeth—teeth that fell to the seafloor millions of years ago, slow-danced in sediment, then accreted into these strange, balls of metal.

Liz Taylor, CEO of DOER Marine, reminds us: there are plenty of reasons to feel hopeless about the ocean—but also 8 billion reasons for hope. Each of us can make better choices, take part in local restoration, and care for the ocean like our lives depend on it. Because they do. #OceanHoptimism

Last night’s #OceanHoptimism was so much fun. Liz Taylor kicked us off by celebrating our own SF Bay Hope Spot—highlighting seagrass restoration gains and the Wild Oyster Project’s gritty, local magic. Proof that recovery is already happening right here in our backyard. Come be a part of it!

We’re continuing the reef-futures arc we began in @therevelator.org, but now through the lens of a coral Pokémon whose split fate offers both a caution and a compass. After all, the point of speculative fiction isn’t prediction—it’s course correction while we still can.

Celebrating the 50-year mark of the rebel spirit that has shaped Hawaiʻi’s conservation pulse—just like The Monkey Wrench Gang ignited awareness, the courageous landing on Kahoʻolawe in 1976 embodied that Abbey ethos: armed not with wrenches but with aloha-ʻāina, defiance and hope. 🌊🌿#OceanHoptimism

All this cautionary deep sea mining news this week only underscores the real priority: exploring, not exploiting, the deep. Perfect timing to learn from one of the world’s leading deep sea tech voices—Liz Taylor—at Ocean Hoptimism on Nov 20. Dive in with us. 🌊

A lot of deep-sea mining news this week—and none of it encouraging. A new assessment finds leading projects in American Samoa are unworkable and uneconomic, relying on unproven tech and wildly optimistic cost estimates. Bottom line: the math doesn’t add up.

We've published two articles at @therevelator.org looking back at the 50th anniversary of Edward Abbey’s The Monkey Wrench Gang. First came an essay by the real-world inspiration for one of the novel's characters, Bonnie Abbzug: therevelator.org/happy-50th-b...
Happy 50th Birthday, Monkey Wrench Gang • The Revelator
Half a century after the novel’s publication, the Glen Canyon Dam still stands, now home to the world’s largest mud puddle.

Fifty years on, The Monkey Wrench Gang still rattles the machinery. Abbey’s crew—shaped by friend and “Hayduke” muse Doug Peacock—reminds us that defending wild places demands spine, not spin. Their legacy: defiance, love of place, and a refusal to let destruction slide, then or now. Still true.
