The world's leading health authorities confirm that balanced plant-based diets are associated with significant health benefits. 2. We can start changing it today. Unlike massive, slow-to-change infrastructure projects, transitioning our diets is something we can do right now. While most of us can't directly vote on major climate policies or influence the oil industry, our food choices are a powerful lever we all control. 3. It harms the planet in countless ways. Beyond CO, and methane emissions, animal farming is the world's leading cause of soil degradation and biodiversity loss, the most serious threat to the oceans, the largest emitter of ammonia and nitrous oxide, one of the largest users of freshwater, the largest user of land, and the single biggest driver of rainforest destruction. That's still not all. Animal agriculture is also the largest system of organized violence in history, a leading driver of world hunger, the world's leading cause of antibiotic resistance, and the single most risky human activity for pandemics. National Emergency Briefing on the climate and nature crisis On 27th November, ten of the UK’s leading experts briefed an invite-only audience of around 1,250 politicians and leaders from business, culture, faith, sport and the media with the latest implications for health, food, national security and the economy. The scientists and other experts explained why the UK needs to take emergency-level action at a similar scale to that seen in wartime.
