The thread about The Mound’s Electric Blanket; keeping buses (and rugby) running in the face of “winter’s fierce onslaught”
Once again somehow it is December in Edinburgh and temperatures are forecast to drop below freezing within the week. Relatively speaking our city isn't a particularly cold one and it is even less a snowy one, but when the temperatures do drop the steep gradients of its north-facing streets can prove treacherous. Seventy-odd years ago, the authorities faced a particular headache at The Mound, an accident black-spot where a series of tragedies had been narrowly avoided by good luck alone. Forced to act, they turned to the white heat of technology and installed the first road heating system in the UK; the fabled "electric blanket". In theory it would prove a triumphant success, but it cost three times more to run than the grit it was meant to replace and when the opportune political moment came along it was quietly abandoned - but never forgotten.

Could even pay for itself with a congestion charge - after all isn’t everything supposed to be revenue-neutral to the council now?

bsky.app/profile/mark...
Year 1 data on congestion pricing in Manhattan…

* Vehicle traffic: -11%
* Foot traffic: +3.4%
* Storefront vacancy: -0.9%
* Pollution: -22%
* Revenue for mass transit: $548M

So YES this has been a huge success.

Important to point out that the Bus Infrastructure Fund for the whole of Scotland is £20m, Edinburgh has secured £2m. The previous scheme had a £500m budget of which only £27m was ever handed out. We have one hand tied behind our backs!

Amazing! Cargo bike on a Scotrail train.Once upon a time, I couldn’t even take a kiddie back tandem with a baby and toddler on it.
Bike delivery day. Our van guy is working on harvest in Borders so we're trying out the cargobike provision on ScotRail's 8am train to Glasgow. Staff not really aware but pretty OK once I showed him web pages etc. Other bikes in 2nd area as 8 coach train. @edi.bike @edfoc.bsky.social @spokes.org.uk

A review of STATS19 collision data on Rose Street: [1/?]
Living Streets Edinburgh Group is please to report that councillors have rejected council officer recommendations to encourage cycling on Rose St.
We've no objection to exempting cyclists from one-way restrictions in general but Rose Street is a special case which should never have been included.

Germany shifts over 2 million e-bikes every year. France: over 500,000.

Britain? It will be lucky to get to 150,000. Why?

Because people need to feel safe to cycle, and that requires serious and sustained government support, which has not been forthcoming.

Emulating the bike-friendly highways enjoyed by our continental neighbours will take a lot more money and political will
