This is just a map of drainage basins, not a recommendation for state boundaries. It postdates JW Powell's Report on the Lands of the Arid Region (1878), but even by that date the states of California, Nevada, and Colorado existed, as did territorial boundaries that became state lines. Short 🧵

NEW During the last Ice Age, the inhospitable highlands of modern Spain were thought to be uninhabitable, abandoned for the coasts. New research finds evidence for Upper Palaeolithic occupation in the harsh Iberian Meseta, questioning this idea.

(Kind of spoiled dealing with active Cordilleran adjacent basins though, I guess. There's usually a datable ash layer or basalt *somewhere* people have tied interpretation of the stratigraphy to in the places I work with/think about.)

It has some weird stuff with geology happening like earthquakes abruptly forming endoheric basins and a chunk of the Appalachians being lodged in the Andes and also previously having been grafted to western Africa and I think it's all really cool and neat

yes. and every bit of hot water I use is over the greasy items on the bottom of the sink as a pre-wash. which means much less soap and rinsing time as well. I never collect a sink full of water. just use the dishes themselves as small basins. this is how I learned it in poverty & the desert.

Round goldfish bowls are forbidden for animal cruelty where I live.

#onthisday, 10 November 1965, one of the last Victorian-style #TurkishBaths to be built was opened at the Derby Public Baths in #Blackpool by Lord Derby. His grandfather should have opened the swimming pools in 1939, but the war intervened. They were closed and demolished in 1990. See ALTs 🗃️ #C19th

The Caspian Seal is the Caspian Sea’s only marine mammal. Each year adults head north to gather on ice and pup, molt on northern islands, then disperse to central & southern basins.

Rivers and reservoirs in Crimea have gradually started to fill up

According to hydrologists, the most significant precipitation fell in the basins of the rivers in the southwestern foothills and on the Southern Coast of Crimea, where the amount ranged from 50 to 137.8 mm.

This illustration shows the gas giant Saturn with some of its many satellites in front. In the foreground is Rhea, the second largest moon of this planet, after Titan. With a mean diameter of 1528 km (764 miles), Rhea is about half the size of our own Moon. Its surface is heavily cratered, with two very large impact basins and numerous fractures. Its density suggests it is made up of about one-quarter rock and three-quarters water ice. Four other Saturnian moons can be seen in the distance, close to the ring plane. From left to right they are Dione, Mimas, Enceladus and Tethys. An artist's impression of Charon as it might appear from the surface of Pluto. In this depiction, Charon's phase is new - i.e. the Sun is directly behind it. Therefore Charon is only visible by the faint sunlight that Pluto reflects onto it from the Sun. Because Pluto and Charon are tidally locked, they keep the same face towards each other at all times, as the Moon does to the Earth. So if one stood on Charon (or Pluto) the other world would stay fixed in the sky - never setting or rising, but still cycling through its phases. And if one were on the wrong hemisphere of Pluto (or Charon) one would never see the other world. These events, CMEs for short, are powerful releases of solar charged particles (plasma) and magnetic field, travelling on the solar wind. When a CME hits Earth, it can cause a geomagnetic storm which disrupts the planet’s magnetosphere, our radio transmissions and electrical power lines. They can damage artificial satellites and cause long-lasting power outages. Humans in orbit are also very vulnerable to these events, whose high-energy particles are not shield by typical spacecraft.
