I’ve shared many maps showing river basins but none like this! We are seeing the population living in each basin. Many big “countries” emerge that way but also many new micro states. Great fun. Source: buff.ly/628eSWm

This is just a map of drainage basins, not a recommendation for state boundaries. It postdates JW Powell's Report on the Lands of the Arid Region (1878), but even by that date the states of California, Nevada, and Colorado existed, as did territorial boundaries that became state lines. Short 🧵

Te Paki giant sand dunes. Te Paki Recreation Reserve Northland.

These golden sand dunes are up to 150m / 500ft tall & are great fun to slide down.

My frustration learning modern analytic philosophy: It gets lost in micro-details, and the holistic picture grows murky. Problems seem contingent on prior commitments. As an amateur, it feels like recursive hairsplitting, just attractor basins like relativist vs absolutist, anti-X vs X...

A prolonged drought and heat wave in September 2023 highlights a “worrisome warning trend” across rivers and lake basins, especially for those in the Amazon.

Amazon heat wave heated lakes to dangerous levels - The Weather Network
The authors are calling for better monitoring of tropical lakes, which are home to countless endangered species and are particularly vulnerable to climate change.

We visited a park while running errands. Ice is beginning to form along the edges of lakes and across the surface of water basins. Nice to enjoy some fresh air. ❤️🐾 #dogs #poodles #friends

NEW During the last Ice Age, the inhospitable highlands of modern Spain were thought to be uninhabitable, abandoned for the coasts. New research finds evidence for Upper Palaeolithic occupation in the harsh Iberian Meseta, questioning this idea.

(Kind of spoiled dealing with active Cordilleran adjacent basins though, I guess. There's usually a datable ash layer or basalt *somewhere* people have tied interpretation of the stratigraphy to in the places I work with/think about.)

It has some weird stuff with geology happening like earthquakes abruptly forming endoheric basins and a chunk of the Appalachians being lodged in the Andes and also previously having been grafted to western Africa and I think it's all really cool and neat

yes. and every bit of hot water I use is over the greasy items on the bottom of the sink as a pre-wash. which means much less soap and rinsing time as well. I never collect a sink full of water. just use the dishes themselves as small basins. this is how I learned it in poverty & the desert.

Lakes in the Amazon became hotter than the maximum temperature recommended for hot tubs as unprecedented heat and drought in 2023 turned them into “shallow, simmering basins,” according to a new study — and it proved a death sentence for endangered dolphins. https://cnn.it/4oPGmWm

Deservedly! Whoever thought keeping amazing free-roaming intelligent creatures captive in small round basins while having to perform for pesky humans was a good idea?
Round goldfish bowls are forbidden for animal cruelty where I live.

I would be forever plotting my revenge, were I a captive orca.

#onthisday, 10 November 1965, one of the last Victorian-style #TurkishBaths to be built was opened at the Derby Public Baths in #Blackpool by Lord Derby. His grandfather should have opened the swimming pools in 1939, but the war intervened. They were closed and demolished in 1990. See ALTs 🗃️ #C19th

The Caspian Seal is the Caspian Sea’s only marine mammal. Each year adults head north to gather on ice and pup, molt on northern islands, then disperse to central & southern basins.

Slow-reproducing and commercially exploited, they are listed under CMS Appendices I & II: www.cms.int/sites/defaul...
