#anacardiaceae
Habitat location is the best way to tell this from from a few species of sumac shrubs you see lining roadways (not in wetlands). Those are in another genus (Rhus) but the same family (Anacardiaceae). Those, you can make a tea from the fruits, among other uses...

Fun fact: cashews are in the Anacardiaceae family, most of which contain urushiol, the active irritant of poison ivy.

It includes pistachios and mangoes and poison ivy and poison sumac and poison oak.

It's interesting to think what a Anacardiaceae family reunion would be like.

Poison ivy (Anacardiaceae: Toxicodendron radicans) is well-known for causing contact dermatitis in most people. A compound in the sap called urushiol typically causes an itchy red rash. In spite of this some animals eat the leaves and birds eat the white berries. Blissfield Michigan, 24 Jun 2025.

While looking at axillary buds, I noticed this strange phenomenon in Rhus glabra: The petiole base completely covers & conceals the axillary bud, which is revealed (and can grow) only when the leaf has fallen away. #Anacardiaceae #buds #Botany 🌾🧪🌱

Political violence is wrong but botanical violence is ok?!

First they came for the Anacardiaceae…
It’s possible to hold two thoughts in your mind at the same time: First, political violence is wrong. Second, cashews are not nuts, they are legumes.
