Great thread on ret-conning obamas energy strategy and data on fossil fuel economics over the past two decades
This Yglesias piece in the NYT is horrifically bad. Almost every "fact" it cites is provably false. At best it is cocktail party banter from a pundit who knows nothing of energy. At worst, it was cut/paste from oil industry talking points. So, a rebuttal: www.nytimes.com/2025/12/18/o...

NEW: Colorado Sens Hickenlooper and Bennet announce they're putting a hold on the Senate appropriations package to demand funding for NCAR.

Bennet said today that the Trump administration's move to dismantle the climate/weather lab is retaliation for Tina Peters' imprisonment.

All prestigious National Resource Centers. Incomprehensible from an institution of UNC’s caliber.

The first time someone told me that my last name was the reason I got something and they didn’t…

…Ross Douthat was 11 years old. It’s always been this way, and it’s exhausting.

NCAR is quite literally our global mothership.

Everyone who works in climate and weather has passed through its doors and benefited from its incredible resources.

Dismantling NCAR is like taking a sledgehammer to the keystone holding up our scientific understanding of the planet.

Unbelievable.

BIG change to “5: data management plans”

“data are to be made publicly and freely available at the time of publication.”

and

“Recipients are required to share all data supporting NSF funded publications at the time of publication. Exceptions…should be described and justified within the DMSP.”

Holy CRAP.

Retired engineer takes random pics of *kids*, without consent or attribution, bins them into “autistic” or “not autistic”, and uploads that “data” for free on Kaggle.

Well over a HUNDRED papers are published, 38 in Springer Nature, 25 in IEEE, using it.

And no reviewers objected? WTF.🧪
Springer Nature retracts, removes nearly 40 publications
The dataset contains images of children’s faces downloaded from websites about autism, which sparked concerns at Springer Nature about consent and reliability.

In retrospect it shouldn’t be a surprise that Rufo pivoted so quickly from “I am the scourge of the intellectual elite” to “I will be your palatable stephen miller by using the language of the intellectually elite”. It’s where the attention (and money) are.

Rep. Cammack’s represents the Florida 3rd, which is home to UF. Foreign-born faculty, staff, and students have made this university what it is, and without UF the economy and well-being of her district - and the state of Florida more broadly - would collapse. This is simply disgraceful.
Rep. Kat Cammarck: "Today, one in six people in the US is foreign born. That quite frankly is not sustainable to maintain a culture that we are known for here in the United States."

Dear Biology professors, prep for this if you teach Evolution.
the primary thing that TPUSA provides to young conservatives is a blueprint for weaponizing the abject cowardice of university administrators against individual teachers and instructors, and university admins should take a long look in the mirror and think about what that says about them
