As I'm dealing with another kidney stone or three, and potentially facing yet another surgery for stone removal, I am reminded of the time I was so over having surgery I insisted on spinal anesthesia so I could knit in the recovery room :P

A bright pink and lime green sock atop an IV bag - the IV was put into my upper left arm pre-surgery in order to facilitate post-op knitting. Why was I sockless? Click to the next photo :P My left sock was removed in recovery so that the oxygen monitor could be placed on my toe, so I could knit. There are perks to a) being a frequent flyer for surgeries and b) having at least one recovery room nurse as a knitter. Minor perks, to be sure, since it's still surgery, but I'll take what I can get! A bright green sock toe on DPNs, with a blurred hospital recovery room desk behind it. "Is she KNITTING???!" was frequently heard as sleeping patients were wheeled in from other surgeries. At one point I was holding an impromptu sock knitting demonstration w/3 nurses. A clearly exhausted, in pain, pre-op woman with messy brown hair sits in a day surgery room. She is holding a green sock on DPNs, a large Magen David necklace is visible around her neck, and her blue hospital mask does not match her orange and red glitter glasses.

My wife and I have alphagal (allergic to everything mammal, so no beef) and we love ostrich and emu. It is like a lean beef. I smoke a flank on my green egg to 120 degrees and it cuts like butter. Love your post.

I recently saw a video from a North Carolina farmer who recently contracted AlphaGal from a Lone Star tick.

Based on the conspiracy theories about that syndrome that he seemed willing to consider along with his description of how many of his neighbors has contracted it, maybe worth monitoring.

If I infect myself with Alpha-Gal syndrome, will I regret it 6 months later?
88% chance. Avoiding unethically-derived animal products is extremely difficult, there's so much stuff you wouldn't expect. I'm sure I've missed a bunch of things in my everyday life since I just don't have time to check them all. But I just learned courtesy of the New York Post that there's a solution to this problem: “Looking back, I was reacting to everything — toilet paper, sugar, glycerin in lotions and fabrics — because they were mammal-derived,” she said. Ok, it doesn't solve the whole problem. It only covers mammal products, so it won't hit insects, which are the largest source of suffering. Still, it would help. Unfortunately milk comes from mammals, so I would have to transition from lactovegan to full vegan, and deal with the health impacts of that. This poses an additional problem for me because I'm an extremely picky eater, and the only non-snack foods I've found that I'm comfortable eating on a daily basis and are reasonably healthy include cheese. Still it's tempting. I probably won't do it for as long as I'm bound to cheese to survive, but if I can find a vegan diet I actually like, I'd kinda want to try it. It's incurable though, hence this market.
