Some totting up for the year: 2 new macros and 16 new micros. Best micros for me were Ethmia bipunctella, Pammene aurana, Ypsolopha sequella and Yponomeuta irrorella. I think the aurana might take top spot, a simply stunning little micro. Garden list somewhere north of 850 now.

We get the Spindle ermine caterpillars too (Yponomeuta cagnagella), but apparently there is no long-term damage to trees Don't Worry About Ermine Webs | Butterfly Conservation share.google/sQ3PS4UfZWRE... We've also had webs on some of our young Hawthorn (Scythropia crataegella). All recovered well.
Don't Worry About Ermine Webs
At this time of year we often receive reports of ghostly silken webbing covering sections of hedgerows and, on occasions, individual trees. Although it can look rather sinister, don't be alarmed. The ...

(4/6)🚀 For #ProjectPsyche, this is just the beginning. This ambitious pan-European project involves:
🔹 184+ researchers
🔹 34 countries
The goal? To sequence all 11,000 European Lepidoptera species!
These chromosome-level genomes are openly available for anyone to use.

Some Yponomeuta turning up tonight, which is rather late in the year for most of those species, I think

Unfortunately, not really distinguishable from some other Yponomeuta sp., even if dissected. If you have a Spindle in your, or an adjacent, garden then it may be one.

I had the window open last night and have just found what I think is Spindle Ermine, Yponomeuta cagnagella on the ceiling. Thoughts welcome. #teammoth

That seems like an astonishing number of species to see in a single year, congratulations! Are you doing gen det on things like Daggers and Rustics and Yponomeuta to separate them out? I just aggregate those things here in Cambs (I send me spreadsheet to the CMR each year)

Not yet ID'd all, but around 50 moths of 25 species inc. Yponomeuta aggs. However, a couple of decent moths in (I believe) Rufous Pearl (Udea fulvalis) & Mompha propinquella. Will post later if anything else of interest from those potted VC37 SO96 #teammoth
