A Sharon Begley byline, almost 5 years after her death.

Upon hearing the news James Watson had died, a STAT reporter said in our Slack, "I wish I could read what Sharon would have written."

Incredible news: Sharon in fact did pre-write a Watson obit. And it is masterful and excoriating.

And now abuse of AI is ruining scientific publishing, slowing it down, creating more work for human scientists to at least somewhat slow down the flood of slop heading our way 😮‍💨
arXiv will no longer accept review articles and position papers unless they have been accepted at a journal or a conference and complete successful peer review.

This is due to being overwhelmed by a hundreds of AI generated papers a month.

Yet another open submission process killed by LLMs.

The amount of AI generated art in slides at this conference, primarily used by older scientists, is killing me. Scientists please. Don’t use these ai platforms to make your figures or slides. They look bad and I have yet to see them meaningfully improve the message of talks.

I will start my own lab @unibe.ch next year, studying succulent anatomy development and if and how this anatomy is required for efficient CAM photosynthesis in different Kalanchoë species 🌱
