now i can't stop thinking about the hypothetical where arsenal get osimhen instead of gyokeres. he could probably even chat to saka in yoruba.
you just can't really guarantee a nigerian guy who thrived in france, italy and turkey would settle off the pitch in *checks notes* somewhere like london, the city with the world's largest nigerian diaspora population

How the fck is Nigeria surviving of all states you'd think would implode. Yoruba-Hausa duopoly that strong?

The Black Hammer dude used to dress up as the Joker but later said he was channeling Eshu (the yoruba god) while just wearing Joker makeup. Which cracked me up. Like showing up in a sonic the hedgehog costume, undeniably, and being like "yeah I'm channeling Loki, from mythology"

this is lovely and also: I don't think this is embarrassing at all!

in the same way that it wouldn't be embarrassing for me to have not picked up on a lot of references to Yoruba mythology in a movie - that's not my culture and it's OK to need it explained.

none of us come from all the cultures.
This is so insightful (unsurprisingly) and most of it passed me by, I'm embarrassed to say
I poured my heart out about Marty Supreme, Jewish identity, why the Old Testament isn’t the same book as the Torah and what it takes to survive trauma

Day 11: Bianca Olumide 🐯

A proud Yoruba woman who's a bit on the wild side. Bianca does tattoos during the day & bartends by night. When she's not working, she's at the club drinking to her hearts content. She secretly loves reading fantasy books and is the eldest daughter in her family.

And I'm sure the Irish and the Scots LOVE having their culture lumped in with the English just as much as the Germans, Polish, Dutch, French, Swedish, Finnish, Italians, Yoruba, Iroquois, Haitian, Mexicans, Yemeni, Omani, Palestinians, Dine, Lakota, Thai, Indians, Ethiopians, Vietnamese, Koreans, Ch
Not that this is in any way a metric, but I’m 5th gen Japanese-American who grew up in Hawaii. My great grandfather went to Yale (I fell very far from THAT tree), tried to enlist in WWI (yes, one) and loved sushi and the Brooklyn Dodgers.

Fuck your “common culture.”

A few months ago I talked about a documentary that Gloria Estefan did called Sangre Yoruba (Yoruba Blood) about how because of slavery the Yoruba people in Cuba and Brazil created new styles of music. Please watch it. It's really good and interesting. Here's the full doc:

Damn. In Nigeria, it means you’re a rebel (though it has spiritual meaning in Yoruba culture) or from overseas, and that makes you a target of gangs and robbers. 😩

"In 2014, [Ebo] Taylor told the BBC that 'with the advent of James Brown and funk music there was the opportunity to develop highlife music. Fela did a lot of work introducing the funk into the Yoruba music while comparatively I did almost the same thing in Ghana.'"

Taylor, who did for Ghanaian music what his friend Fela Kuti did for Nigeria, has been called the greatest rhythm guitarist in history

Over time, what is and isn’t “indigenous” shifts. One could make a reasonable argument that Yoruba is now indigenous in some parts of SE London and English is now indigenous in Lagos

the others are "ẹ" (literary standard for Yoruba has [ATR/RTR] distinction for e but literary standard for Igbo doesn't) and "kp" (Yoruba doesn't have a phonemic /p/ so <p> represents [k͡p~p])

I only gave Oshun a C+. Gone are the African/Yoruban themed floats and costumes that made it distinctive and beautiful. Gone is the Yoruba name Shango for the king. Floats were sparsely populated and many riders skipped masks. Meh and just sad.
