#Wallerstein
Interestingly, Kindleberger emphasized this framing of financialization as a symptom of decadence and decline, whereas Wallerstein argues it's a natural outgrowth of a country's productive and commercial dominance attracting global investment capital. Both consider decline inevitable, though.

In his treatment of the rise of hegemonic powers, Wallerstein points to productive advantage, commercial advantage and financial advantage: cheaper/better manufacture boosts trade dominance which attracts investment.

And empirically the three advantages wane in the same order they wax.

*screams in Wallerstein*
Poverty is a serious issue that we care deeply about. But billionaires aren't responsible for it. The DRC has no billionaires, yet 75% of its population lives in extreme poverty.
We applaud billionaires like Bill Gates and Warren Buffet who have saved millions of lives with their charity.

Think I have my epigraph:

"Decline can only be analyzed as rise, the rise of others within the framework of the efficiencies of profit."

Wallerstein notes that more specialized labor requires a higher wage not just because it takes more training, but because it demands more care.

But the current economic model has become so extractivist that it snuffs out any sense of care on the part of workers.

I don't find this very convincing. I remember everyone saying in Iraq times, oh no, last gasp of a dying empire blah blah and it turns out not to be so at all. I do agree that overreliance on military force weakens US power in the long run, but if Wallerstein is right then the decline is SO SLOW

Vile abuse enabled by Elon Musk's Grok platform has been shared on X by Bella Wallerstein, in which users to post then Grok sexualises an AI image of her outside Auschwitz gates as a concentration camp victim.

She tweets "this place is beyond saving"

I'm pretty heavily Wallerstein-pilled right now, but it makes me think there is a "great divergence" in reverse going on, with the core declining faster than the periphery as the "longue durée" global order crumbles.

Throw in France and you have a strong "revenge of the 16th century" vibe.
From this vg piece on Starmer's popularity, a depressing example of Westminster insularity. There were 7 German chancellors (8 counting an acting one) in the 42 years before the iPhone & only three since. Ditto only 3 Spanish PMs since 2004. Look across the Channel lads.

Balibar and Wallerstein wrote about this in the 80s. The „New Racism“, they said, claims not that race itself is biological, but racism is.
a core annoyance of mine is when modern Republicans pretend racism is just a force of nature that comes alongside immigrants and not something they actively inflamed and endorsed, thereby pretending to be the “real anti-racists” or whatever

The good part of the research I'm doing for European takeoff in the 16th century is reading Wallerstein, Gellner, Walter Rodney and Eric Williams.

The bad part is that I realize I will have to read Guns, Germs and Steel, as well as Sapiens. And maybe even some Niall Ferguson.

Pray for me.
I'd argue it's more accurate to say there's always a tension between the political and economic logics in play in a world-system, and that for this reason they tend toward imperialism (organized by the political power of states) or globalization (organized by the economic rules of the market).

Awesome to find @cybelecanterel.bsky.social here! Give her a follow and go subscribe. Has her thumb on the pulse of the weirdos ruling what's left of America.
I can faintly hear Immanuel Wallerstein spinning in his grave at being used by an avatar of "the spirit of Davos".
Real is real. Try as he might, Thiel can’t hoard his way to immortality, nor disrupt a way out of ecological limits, nor build surveillance infrastructure massive enough to control all contradictions. Real was there all along— he’s just trying to avoid confronting it.

While searching "Immanuel Wallerstein" on the Armenian language Internet, only 3 results popped up.
Unpopular opinion: Whatever one's intellectual weight and impact, if they never spoke about the Armenian Genocide, they don't have the slightest chance to get attention in Armenia.
