#USMNT—but
I don't know if it was on purpose but Ben (or your editor) chose a great thumbnail image. It also features the Seattle Sounders CR7, Cristian Roldan AKA "Pochetino's Perfect Player" from the USMNT.

The training programs be working great over here. 💪

Please also keep an eye on Georgie Minnungou. 👁

I definitely feel this way about USA in the Olympics, but I can't say the same about USA in the World Baseball Classic. Also, the USMNT as co-hosts of the World Cup needs to show that they represent a nation of immigrants.
I get this, but here's where I'm at:

Trump & Vance are the worst of us. America is bigger than them, and they win if we let them define us.
Team USA is the best of us. It's filled with Americans MAGA hates—first-generation + immigrants, LGBTQ+ athletes, people of color—& I'm gonna root for them.
I really really want these athletes to have a great experience, be competitive and perhaps win a gold medal, but, honestly, the thought of hearing "USA!USA!USA!" during their games kinda makes me cringe. If we were any other country the IOC would ask us to march under the olympic flag.

Would Ricardo Pepi feel comfortable with his family watching a USMNT match in Mnpls? It’s just cowardice from every single writer. I have hope for the Guardian team yet, but the rest are cowards who check their ethics and duties at the door @paultenorio.bsky.social @stevengoff.bsky.social

Not the worst injury, but not great for Cardoso either, especially when he was just starting to generate some momentum. #usmnt

United States men's national team midfielder Johnny Cardoso has a low grade muscle injury sustained in Wednesday's training session and will be out for at least a week, Atlético Madrid said.

I'm sure it's personally disappointing, but the collapse of Ricardo Pepi's Fulham move is probably the best thing for his #USMNT World Cup hopes.

I explained why earlier this week for @forbes.com: www.forbes.com/sites/ianqui...
For Ricardo Pepi, Fulham’s Transfer Loss May Be The USMNT’s Gain
Fulham clearly valued Pepi, but probably as an eventual replacement for Raul Jimenez, who is still with the Premier League side until the end of the season.

Max Arfsten “hungry” for World Cup, USMNT, MLS and Super Bowl

Arfsten made his USMNT debut in January 2025 and proceeded to earn 16 caps under Mauricio Pochettino. The Columbus Crew left back led the squad with five assists, helping the Americans rattle off victories over Uruguay, Paraguay, Australia, Japan, among others.

This game has me reminiscing on the CanMNT-USMNT WCQ at the same venue in January 2022 - a breakthrough Canada win, perhaps the high-water mark of their John Herdman era.

Hamilton Stadium sits in the kind of OG mixed-use (both houses and industry) locale common on other continents, but rarer here

It is cold tonight for the Forge vs Tigres match in Hamilton, Ontario; a town Anna Brownell Jameson saw big things for in her travel log ‘Winter Studies and Summer Rambles in Canada’, but this USMNT 2022 WC qualifier against Honduras was colder.

The USMNT has four friendlies remaining before the World Cup — but for Maurcio Pochettino, those friendlies are "four World Cup games" 🇺🇸

With key matches nearing, who should be in the U.S. squad?

@sanjaysujan.bsky.social projects Pochettino's roster.

Mauricio Pochettino says his team's World Cup starts in March, not June. Here's who should be on that early World Cup roster.

This a great debate and it depends on what we define as “biggest.” Subjectively, I think nothing touches Howard to Man. United. USMNT No. 1 heir going to arguably the biggest club on earth. Davies ends up being a bigger success story overall but Howard stands alone in “pop” when it occurred.

not to take away from malik, who is awesome, but in terms of pure talent there might be five USMNT players who have ever been better than gio and a mix of injuries + [FILE NOT FOUND] might mean he misses the world cup as a 23 year old
February 2, 2026 at 4:17 PM
The only way this makes sense is Fulham are basically buying him for next year and gambling that this is a lower price than they’d get in the summer

But there was no guarantee he’s on the World Cup team if he’s banging on goals for PSV, let alone riding the bench at Fulham #usmnt
🚨⚫️⚪️ Fulham have agreed €37m package with PSV Eindhoven for Ricardo Pepi! All agreed also on personal terms. 🇺🇸 Final step needed: PSV looking for replacement on the market.

Maybe. I think that would have been true under some other USMNT coaches, but I do feel like Poch gives just as much of a chance to MLS players as over seas players

Max has to be in that top tier of players on the bubble to make the squad, along with Luna
January 30, 2026 at 6:37 PM
I’ve bitched about the USMNT silence on every issue, but Poch going all avoidant on something simple as ticket prices being stupid expensive is an absolute joke. If you can’t even speak out for the fans to go to a match…what good are you?

It will be hard enough for Mauricio Pochettino to pick the #USMNT World Cup roster, but he has another big choice to make first: how many players he'll take at each position.

He says he isn't thinking about it yet, but he is thinking about flexibility:

www.inquirer.com/soccer/mauri...
Mauricio Pochettino isn’t thinking yet about all the details of his USMNT World Cup squad
It will be hard enough for Pochettino to pick the 26-player roster, But it will just as vital to decide how many players he’ll take at each position. He hasn't reached that point yet.

Ok, might as well start a Landycakes discourse this morning, I'd rather bitch about this than (/waves hands).
Donovan was a great, but
1) Never lived up to his full potential
2) Had his goal # 's significantly inflated b/c he was the PK taker
3) Was never the best player on any USMNT squad
January 30, 2026 at 1:50 PM
Sadly, it’s naive to think that any USMNT coach in this moment would be outspokenly critical of FIFA & Trump. But I’d like the bar to be at least as high as “no comment” & not defending them at every fucking turn. Jesus Christ, dude
January 30, 2026 at 1:35 AM
I hate to admit it, but I haven't followed MLS. Lived in Europe too long and never really made the change. I do like the USMNT and believe there's lots of talent there, but I'm not a fan of Poch. Didn't like him at Tottenham, PSG, or Chelsea. I'm not confident that he can put that talent together.

Malik Tillman with the goal. That was straight hustle! Of course the keeper should have done better but it’s awesome to see Tillman get two goals in this match. #USMNT #ChampionsLeague

I know it’ll be painful, but cancel it and suspend the USMNT from all other international competitions indefinitely.

Villarreal commit an obvious back-pass that goes uncalled
Play restarts, pass back to keeper who tris to clear it but it hits Malik Tillman and goes in #ucl #usmnt

This *must* be Alex Kapp. Hard to tell for certain with the beard, and no idea why he is described as "Alex H." but this must be Alex Kapp. Son of 1980s USMNT player Erhardt Kapp. #SickosUnidos
