I can't do better than quote the elegant prose of Sir Michael Levey in Painting in Eighteenth-Century Venice (1959; 1994): 'No photographs unfortunately can give a proper conception of the ceiling as a whole, nor of the effect on the visitor slowly climbing the staircase as the vast fresco gradually expands before him. [...] Nothing less than the four Continents of the world are assebled to do homage to the reigning Prince-Bishop, Carl Philipp von Greiffenklau, whose ermine-draped portrait is upheld by putti while Fame trumpets his name to the ends of the earth. The extraordinary apotheosis of this petty and unimpressive person, one of a long line of Prince-Bishops whom the world has forgotten, is a triumph of sentiment over reason. So absurd, indeed, is it to suppose that the Continents would ever pay any attention whatsoever to Carl Philipp von Greiffenklau that the conception is almost imaginative. [...] Tiepolo's felicitous touch ... [keeps] the whole vast scheme fresh and lively and marvellously effortless. Never again could even Tiepolo express himself with such exuberance and enchanted virtuosity. Given the globe to create, his imagination expanded globally. Such an achievement could happen only once.'

A scherzo is a musical composition made up of little phrases, with implications of playfulness. Tiepolo's <em>Scherzi</em> are improvised scenes of magicians, philosophers, soldiers, old men in turbans, and shepherds who consult horoscopes, skulls, skeletons, and snakes among altars, ruins, and ancient bas-reliefs. The transitory nature of life, the vanity of human pursuits, and direct confrontation with death, are the recurring themes. The eerie mood of the prints reflect the preoccupation of 18th-century Venice with magic, superstition, and witchcraft. Light was Tiepolo's essential means of expression and the basic element of his style. The sensation of sunlight bathing each scene is an illusion created by the contrast of the nervous, broken lines against white paper. Shade is obliterated; even the darkest areas are transparent as they, too, are created out of light.

Inspired by Giovanni Battista Tiepolo's ceiling cycle The Four Continents, specifically the fresco titled Apollo and the Four Continents, painted in the mid-18th century. Monkman reimagined Tiepolo's work to critique Euro-Western history and colonialism by recasting the allegorical figures into a Canadian Indigenous context.

My partner’s birthday isn’t until Saturday but he’s not on Bluesky and I can’t hold this in. We loved the Tiepolo exhibition the Morgan Library had on last year so I bought one of their cards and drew this inside. Can’t wait to give this to him!

[17] One of Tiepolo’s greatest achievements was his use of Modellos or preparatory sketches. Here he fluidly sketched, in oil paint, superlative ideas that are triumphs of Venetian art. Each is utterly covetable

In 1739 a pair of monumental altarpieces by two Venetian painters (Giovanni Battista Tiepolo and Giambattista Pittoni) were installed in a church in southern Germany, part of a carefully orchestrated decorative program that included architecture, painting, sculpture, and decorative stuccowork. This sketch is Tiepolo’s initial design for his altarpiece, submitted for approval before beginning the final work. With quick, assured brushstrokes, he represents the Christian martyr Sebastian bound to a tree and shot with arrows, flooded with radiant light to symbolize his devotion to his faith.

Giambattista Tiepolo’s The Death of Hyacinthus (1752-53) shows the god Apollo mourning one of his (many) dead boyfriends. In mythology, Hyacinthus was killed by being hit with a discus, but Tiepolo has changed this to… a tennis racket! And balls! I guess Apollo’s backhand is literally deadly??

This small, quickly painted picture is typical of the sketches Tiepolo made as studies for larger compositions. When completed full-scale on a ceiling, works like these give the impression of a massive window, through which one can see angels or mythological beings floating among the clouds. Although we know from the work's shape that it was a study for a ceiling painting, it is not related to any of Tiepolo's finished architectural decorations. Tiepolo used such sketches to explore design problems, experiment with form and color, or give his clients an idea of how a finished project would look. With the help of a large workshop, which included two of his sons, Tiepolo completed a number of painted ceilings and decorative schemes across Europe.

The title of the series to which these prints belong is literally translated as "Various Caprices," but it could equally be called "Flights of Fancy." The images are intentionally open-ended. Tiepolo provides us with actors, props, and stage sets, but there is no script. We are free to exercise our imaginations and our emotions to create stories and perhaps meanings of our own. The restrained gestures of most of the figures minimize narrative suggestion and heighten psychological tension. Tiepolo's loose, open treatment of forms and lines emphasizes that these are fantasies, barely material at all.

Jacopo Tiepolo was the 43rd doge of Venice, ruling from 1229 to 1249. He left his marks on the city, which are clearly visible even today, eight centuries later.

Any visitor to Venice will have seen some of Tiepolo's legacy, and neybe even,unknowingly, his tomb.

'The Banquet of Cleopatra' (1743-1744) at the National Gallery Victoria (NGV) in Melbourne is huge (2.5 m x 3.6 m), exquisitely coloured and draws my eye to something new every time I visit (for free!!).

Moral of painting: do not bet against Cleopatra!

She has carried him away to her magical garden, where he sits enthralled, gazing into her eyes while she looks into a magic mirror. The knight’s sword and shield have been cast aside.
