man holding crucifix Jean-Pierre Norblin de la Gourdaine was a French painter and printmaker active in Poland in the late 18th century. Norblin's charming miniature etchings, representing mostly male heads, street sellers, and vagabonds, reflect both in subject and technique the profound influence of Rembrandt's prints. Norblin was also drawn to Polish subjects, capturing the unfamiliar, exotic world around him in his depictions of men with colossal fur hats and curled moustaches, Cossacks, and Polish historical figures.

red and black drawing of torso, legs and arms of a figure wearing robes, with red overlay garment with scroll designs on PL side Jacob Jordaens was the leading painter in Antwerp in the generation after Rubens. He was greatly influenced by the elder artist and occasionally worked for him. Though he is now best known for his droll genre pictures, he also painted religious, historical, mythological, and allegorical works. His prolific draftsmanship is represented by some 450 drawings plausibly attributed to him today. Like Rubens, he worked with a decisive hand, and scholars have had some difficulty assigning some drawing with certainty to one or the other. Jordaens' work is characterized by clear contours and insistent hatching. He often mixed media in his drawings. The use of black and red chalk, oiled charcoal, gray wash, and white heightening seen in the present drapery study is elaborate but not exceptional. The combination of red and black chalk is a hallmark of his workaday drawings. The crisp, luminous effect produced by the brush work in gray and white typifies the close attention that he gave to lighting in preparing his compositions. Though the present study has not been connected with a finshed painting, it clearly represents a priest raising his hand in a gesture of blessing.

No. 21 This print is from the celebrated eighteenth-century book Monument du Costume, which illustrated the manners, clothes, and amusements of eighteenth-century society. This particular series in the book follows the life of a married lady of the court; here shown promenading with companions and her children at the gardens at Marly, the smaller, more informal royal chateau near Versailles, to which only the king's closest companions were invited. Moreau depicts the elegant group dressed in the latest Parisian fashions, with one of the women shown from behind to highlight the beautifully embellished back of her silk robe a la française and elaborate coiffure adorned with feathers.

Virgil the Sorcerer https://collections.artsmia.org/art/44010/
Virgil (70-19 B.C.E.) was the most famous poet of his time, honored as a divinity after his death. In the popular tradition, the admiration for his literary work went along with that for his supposed powers as a sorcerer. The engraving tells the story of his spurned love for the Emperor’s daughter, who pretended to accept the poet’s advances. She agreed to receive him in secret by lifting him up to her room in a basket, but halfway up she left him dangling until daylight revealed his laughable predicament to the Romans. The prank laid bare the susceptibility of even such a revered man to ordinary human passions. The emperor saves Virgil from further punishments as the magical poet takes his revenge by extinguishing all fires in Rome, except that particular one residing between the legs of the Emperor’s daughter. And for years thereafter, the citizens knew that from that source they could kindle their flames. The tale, which had great popularity between the 14th and 16th centuries, captures the foolishness of all who are in love, but also underscores the malevolent power of lustful women.

Early in his career, he was active in the New York School of Abstract Expressionism, a mid-20th-century movement of avant-garde artists who saw abstraction as the essential vehicle for conveying intense emotion and exploring spirituality and the unconscious through color, form, space, and gesture. Morrison later turned to nature and the earth for inspiration and subject matter, producing paintings, wood collages, drawings, rubbings, and prints that embodied the spiritual concerns of his Native American culture. Many of his later works feature highly abstracted landscapes with high horizon lines and a flattened perspectives, a signature motif that embodied Morrison’s spiritual and symbolic methodology. Though his sculptures and collages could be monumental in scale, Morrison often chose to produce modestly-sized works that could be completed quickly. Indeed, a number of these smaller works were part of his extended series of “surrealist landscapes,” dreamlike depictions of land and sky that resulted from automatic drawing techniques he adopted as a way to tap into the mind’s subconscious.

From 1912 to 1921, he worked in New York as an assistant to the sculptor and St. Paul native Paul Manship (1886–1966). Apart from his portrait busts, most of Lachaise’s works can be likened to prehistoric fertility goddesses, as in this symphony of turns, cascades, and loops.
