#Tekkonkinkreet
Tekkonkinkreet rules. Finally started the Slayers movies I miss the crew from the Tv series but Lina is still great. Fantasy Football one of the easier watches for my bad movie club. Dog Eat Dog , my least favorite schrader I’ve seen but still has its moments.

Lupin III The First (from Godzilla Minus One Director)
Memories
On-Gaku

They also did the theme song to one of my favorite under-the-radar anime movies, TekkonKinkreet. The US version is now sadly highly out-of-print, and I don't believe it is available streaming anywhere. Or at least not legally.

I now own all(sort of) of Taiyo Matsumoto's work that has been translated into English. Technically I still need Blue Spring, but it's Oop and very expensive. I still have to read the final 2 volumes of No. 5 and then Tekkonkinkreet, but have finished everything else. They're all amazing

I have the anime background one on the left (it’s so cool), Tekkonkinkreet is definitely still on my bucket list to get!

I find myself drawn to animated films and OVAs from the 90s, creators like Mamoru Oshii and Satoshi Kon, unique styles like tekkonkinkreet

Haven’t been particularly excited by any recent anime or Netflix animated type shows of late

My 3 bibles lol. I picked up Tekkonkinkreet & the Shuichi art book while in Japan last yr, pure gold mines of inspiration.

These are the absolute masters you should be studying, especially if you’re a texture artist for environment art!

Tekkonkinkreet - peli

BG elements for our fly through of Treasure Town (scene 1 cut 6), painted by the great Shinji Kimura, and "perspective mapped" (「パース・マップ」) onto riverside 3D geo.

Staff names in the signage: Michael (me), Nishimi, Uratani, Ando, Kubo...

Ping Pong (manga)
I watched the anime back when it aired and recently got the physical volumes. I generally prefer the anime versions of Taiyo's works, not that I dislike his art and storytelling as a manga-ka but the anime of Ping Pong (and Tekkonkinkreet) impacted me more. Still, fantastic!

I won't beg the quote request, but I will share

ultimately though they often through various stimuli form rational patterns, ultimately human likes and dislikes are at their very core irrational, impossible to actually predict with perfect accuracy.

sometimes you like things just 'cause, y'know

I feel like nothing will ever pale in comparison to walking into somewhere like blockbuster and catching a glimpse of something like tekkonkinkreet out of the corner of your eye just by chance. I miss that kind of experience

All You Need Is Kill is pretty good

May not be Tekkonkinkreet good but it’s by the same guys, go watch for more weird anime (or an alternate take on Tom Cruise’s Edge of Tomorrow, same source material)

Arias was born in LA, but I wouldn't say Tekkonkinkreet has a clear American influence.
January 18, 2026 at 10:04 AM
True, but would we be able to look at some show in a blind test and say "French influence?" (for example.)

So saying, I'm pretty sure that you could ^^!

And then there is the stylistically quite different "Tekkonkinkreet."

the new one! then Tekkonkinkreet

It had slight pacing issues and sometimes I found the 3D blending a little clunk, but make no mistake this movie kicks ass. I know the visuals are divisive but I loved them. Tekkonkinkreet meets Studio Trigger with good characters. See it on the biggest screen.
