A space to express my love of animation.

My choice for most under rated Disney post renaissance film is The Emperor‘s New Groove. This is Disneys most brazen comedic film. After the musicals of the renaissance this was seen as backsliding to something leas ambitious, yet it is trading lavish production for Chuck Jones style jokes.

Have you ever seen a movie that sticks to you completely? You sit in silence at the end of the movies because you can’t process it emotionally? That’s how I felt today after watching Shoplifters. What a film.

Science Saru don’t miss. Ghost in the Shell have 2 great movies, 1 great series (Stand alone complex) and then a ton of mediocre. I hope for a return to greatness.
First teaser for "The Ghost In The Shell" anime series by Science Saru studio.
Directed by Mokochan (+ Shuhei Handa on character designs & animation).
Coming in July.

Picking the most popular under rated film of the Disney renaissance is difficult because most are properly rated as great films. I picked the film Hunchback of Notre Dame. I remember the initial reaction because it was darker than Disney usually gets, but time has been kind to this powerful film.

The most underrated film of the Disney Bronze Age is The Great Mouse Detective. It’s a bit misshapen but fun. There’s a stripper scene where I am sure a few furries found themselves. This is the type of movie animators make when the bosses aren’t looking. Vincent Price is great as Ratigan.

My choice for most underrated Disney movie of the silver era is 101 Dalmations. Art inspired by art nouveau, a sketchy fluid style, an iconic villain, and a delightful story. What’s not to love?

My choice for most underrated Disney film of the wartime era is The Three Caballeros. Some dated cultural tropes aside, this is a very enjoyable raucous movie with exuberant music and starring Donald (their best legacy character) and Jose and Panchito. You’ll smile throughout.

My choice for most underrated Disney film from the Golden Era is Fantasia. All 5 films from this era are properly regarded as classics. Some claim Fantasia is pretension and boring, but nothing could be further from the truth. The first segment is the weakest, but kids love it.

Ranking the Disney Eras Part 1. Disney has 8 distinct eras over their history, and despite their cultural dominance for the first 2/3rds of their existence those eras have peaks and valleys in popularity and quality.
I am going to examine these eras over the next few days. Today I rank the eras...

Studio Colorido makes good comfort films like A Whisker Away or Penguin Highway. They are bright and enjoyable and have dynamic energetic characters with warm humour. Cosmic Princess Kaguya continues this tradition for the first 2 acts of this film...

Elio doesn‘t really belong there but it’s pretty good movie and didn’t deserve the hate it got. These things come with a huge grain of salt. Hope this gets eyes on Arco and Little Amelie

3 podcasts I enjoyed about Ghibli.
1) Ghiblioteque is a Ghibli 101 podcast. Super laid back and relaxing. One host introduced Ghibli films to his cohost experiencing them for the first time. They’ve moved on to mainly be about international animation and put out several informative books...

I think my favourite character type is the well meaning emotionally detached character trying to understand human behaviours. It always works for me.

Great movies for free on Internet Archive, Tubi, Kanopy, or Youtube. This week is Project A Ko, the classic satire of 80s anime from 1986, available on Tubi. The main humour is to escalate and get more ridiculous as it goes. Every 10 minutes it gets sillier and sillier...

Non spoiler thoughts about Frieren after watching S 2 ep 1, and why it deserves to be considered a top tier anime. I like empty calorie shows like Solo Levelling or Demon Slayer quite a bit, but they are just that (and when I was 16 I no doubt would have LOVED them)…

It had slight pacing issues and sometimes I found the 3D blending a little clunk, but make no mistake this movie kicks ass. I know the visuals are divisive but I loved them. Tekkonkinkreet meets Studio Trigger with good characters. See it on the biggest screen.

These end credits are sublime (reminds me of Frederic Back). There are shows I love others don’t, and I get it. There are shows others love that I don’t, and I get it. Frieren is a show that if you don’t like it then we probably won’t agree on anything (especially if you call it slow).
From "Frieren" Season 2 ending, animated with colored pencils by Mimei Aoume (she had already worked on Season 1 ending).
