(2/3) Climate startups have to follow the same rules as anyone else:
- They need paying customers (n.b. “The Grid” is not a customer!)
- Customer lifetime value must exceed customer acquisition cost
- Awesome tech doesn't replace business discipline + sound technoeconomics

adding this to my internal heuristic database for energy storage technoeconomics
A couple years ago NREL had it at ~$100/kWh for a large project (1+ GW, ~18 hours) with a $2.4B price tag, and $427 for a small project that only has $500M in capex.

But uncertainty of -50% to +100% because the projects are so variable

I'd like to do an RFB technoeconomics post eventually, so that people can play with the numbers themselves

They're cooking limestone to get the lime, thus releasing CO2 in the process. This makes me doubt the technoeconomics of this compared to say just grinding basalt or olivine.

They say it's half the energy input of DAC, but I want to see the comparison vs other ERW techniques.

pretty standard in energy technoeconomics & system models. But (ducks) learning curves & experience curves are a backward looking indicator

Hi Bluesky! I am a chemical engineering postdoc 🇦🇺 who looks at process models and technoeconomics of precision fermentation, and other bioproduction processes to support building the bioeconomy. Interested in multidisciplinary research, including various sectors working together to achieve goals.

At which point I said, approximately, “Not another fucking algae company!”

Because I had spend the previous 15 years, mostly with Bio-era, looking at the technoeconomics of algal-based chemical production and found it wanting.

I *want* that to work, but it just doesn’t. Yet, anyway.

Curtailed electricity is an opportunity to be exploited but it is not a get-out-of-jail-free card for poor technoeconomics. If your usage of curtailed electrons is inefficient, investors will fund someone who can exploit that cheap power more efficiently.

Need all the old skills plus a bunch of new ones to deal with rapid technological change, disinformation, & the climate crisis. Successful industrial strategy requires a deep partnership with communities, & deep understanding of technoeconomics. New skills & disciplines, & subject matter expertise.
Policy wise:

1990s/2000s was the time of lawyers

2010s was the time of economists

Now is the time of McRibs (industrial strategy)

Why is plastic recycling categorically different from metals recycling, which is highly successful, other than the technoeconomics involved, which can shift?
