My article, "Sambizanga (1972/2021): The Thin Green Line Between Canons and Revolutions," just came out as part of a Close-Up on Sambizanga guest edited by Gust Burns for Black Camera. Also in this issue is a Close-Up on Sara Gómez. I couldn't have asked for better holiday reading.

Very excited about Criterion Channel next month, even if then adding Gus Van Sant’s shot for shot Psycho remake means I’m going to watch it out of morbid curiosity. Listed the films in the alt text

43 - Leila and the Wolves (1984)

So glad I took the time to watch both this and Sambizanga this year. Both are directed by women and focus on the lives of women, their often forgotten contributions to resistance against oppressors as well as their unique struggles.

33. Sambizanga (1972, dir. Maldoror)

another anti-colonial film that is incredibly moving. a hard watch, but an essential one for African cinema.

It's so funny that so many people project their baggage from their "white film bro" ex-boyfriends from college onto him, when he has done more to preserve and distribute films by non-white and women directors than almost anyone in Hollywood. Have you seen Sambizanga? You can thank Martin for that!
